Minor Details: Games of May 1

A fine outing for Trevor May.  A successful AA debut for Tyler Duffey. A struggle for Jose Berrios.

LOUISVILLE 2, ROCHESTER 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  James Beresford was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Chris Parmelee was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Trevor May struck out eleven in six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.  Aaron Thompson struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Jason Bourgeois was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Josh Smith pitched seven innings, allowing one run on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  A pair of walks and a two-out single by Oswaldo Arcia put Rochester in front 1-0 in the third.  Bourgeois singled and scored on Skip Schumaker's double in the fourth to tie the score.  In the sixth, Hernan Iribarren walked, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Bourgeois double to put Louisville up 2-1.  The closest the Red Wings came to tying the score is when Parmelee hit a two-out double in the eighth.

Of note:  Doug Bernier was 0-for-4.  Arcia was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Eric Farris was 0-for-4.

NEW BRITAIN 6, HARRISBURG 3 IN HARRISBURG (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer, his third.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run (his fourth), scoring twice.  Kenny Wilson was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched six innings, giving up three runs on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Lester Oliveros struck out one in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Brian Jeroloman was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Rick Hague was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the first to give New Britain the early lead.  Mike Kvasnicka led off the second with a home run to make it 4-0.  Vargas added a two-run shot in the fifth to build the lead to 6-0.  Harrisburg scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Jeroloman's homer was one heck of a rally-killer.  The last nine Senators went out following it.

Of note:  Corey Wimberley was 0-for-4.  Nate Hanson was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  A. J. Pettersen was 1-for-3.

HARRISBURG 4, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN HARRISBURG (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Nate Hanson was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Kenny Wilson was 2-for-4 with a run.  Daniel Ortiz was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

PItching star:  Tyler Duffey pitched six innings in his AA debut, giving up one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Caleb Ramsey was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  A. J. Cole struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.

The game:  It looked good most of the way.  A Hanson RBI single made it 1-0 New Britain in the first.  Tony Thomas singled in a run to make it 2-0 in the second.  A sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the sixth, but it went downhill after that.  Harrisburg got one in the bottom of the sixth and then won it with three in the seventh.  A double, an error, another double, and intentional walk tied the score and put men on first and second with one out.  A stolen base made it first and third.  The next batter hit a fielder's choice to short with no out recorded which allowed the winning run to score.  One assumes the shortstop attempted to get the out at home and failed.

Of note:  Corey Wimberley was 0-for-4.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-2 with a walk.  Matt Koch was 0-for-2 with a walk.

PALM BEACH 8, FORT MYERS 2 IN PALM BEACH

Batting star:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

PItching star:  Madison Boer struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Breyvic Valera was 3-for-5 with two triples, scoring three times and driving in one.  Casey Rasmus was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring once and driving in two.  Ildemaro Vargas was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.

The game:  David Washington's homer put Palm Beach on the board in the second.  In the fourth the Cardinals scored on a single, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and an error.  Two in the fifth made it 4-0 Palm Beach.  Fort Myers threatened to come back in the sixth, as a double and four singles plated two and loaded the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the inning.  The Cardinals got one in the sixth and three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4.  Starter Jose Berrios pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, KANE COUNTY 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Zach Larson was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Josue Montanez, in his first start of the season, went four innings, giving up two unearned runs on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Yorman Landa struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  It was scoreless until the fourth, when a pair of singles and a pair of errors produced two runs for Cedar Rapids.  Kane County got the runs back in the fifth when an error was followed by three singles.  In the bottom of the fifth, doubles by Tanner Vavra and Garver led to three runs and a victory for the Kernels.

Of note:  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4.  Vavra was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, KANE COUNTY 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (GAME 2--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs.  Bryan Santy was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer, his second.  Ivory Thomas was 0-for-0 with three walks and two runs.

Pitching star:  Kohl Stewart pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Jacob Hanneman was 1-for-4 and scored twice.  Jordan Hankins was 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.

The game;  Kane County led 2-1 after three, but Santy hit a two-out two-run homer to give Cedar Rapids a 3-2 advantage.  An error led to a Cougars run in the sixth to tie it up, but a walk, a hit batsman, and a two-run double by Wade gave the Kernels a 5-3 lead.  Kane County started the ninth with two singles and a one-out wild pitch cut the lead to 5-4 with the tying run on second.  Another wild pitch advanced him to third with two out, but a ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-2 with two runs.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3.  Zach Larson was 0-for-2 with a walk.

  1. Trevor May struck out eleven in six innings

Deja vu. Is it the hip thing to strike out eleven in six innings? The Twins need to get hip, stat.

  2. May has a 31/8 K/BB rate in 24 1/3 innings and opponents are batting .174 with 1 HR off him. He has a 4.44 ERA somehow with a 0.95 WHIP. He's allowed more than half his base runners to score, although I don't know how many have been allowed to score by relievers. Still, that's an unsustainably low strand rate. It's just 5 starts, but if he's really gotten over his control problems, he could be a really exciting pitcher to watch considering he's always had more strikeouts than innings pitched. I would definitely like to see a rotation of Nolasco, Hughes, Gibson, Meyer and May.
