Minor Details: Games of May 31

Seven shutout innings for Trevor May.  Mark Hamburger makes his season debut.  The DSL season starts.

ROCHESTER 6, GWINNETT 1 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Doug Bernier was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with a home run.  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

Pitching stars:  Trevor May pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  A. J. Achter retired all four batters he faced with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Tyler Pastornicky was 2-for-4 with a run.

The game:  Chris Colabello singled in a run in the first and Florimon homered in the second to give Rochester a 2-0 lead.  They added two more in the fourth, aided by an error, and Bernier singled in two in the sixth.  The lone Gwinnett run came in the eighth on two singles and two walks.

Of note:  Eric Farris was 2-for-4.  Colabello was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

NEW BRITAIN 3, BINGHAMTON 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Brad Boyer was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Virgil Vasquez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Mark Hamburger struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Lester Oliveros pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Johnson was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Matt Clark was 3-for-5 with a run.  Matthew Bowman struck out twelve and walked none in seven innings, allowing three runs on ten hits.

The game:  Binghamton got one in the first but left the bases loaded in the second.  The Mets stranded two more in the third.  New Britain got a hit batsman and three singles in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead.  Binghamton got three consecutive two-out singles to tie it up in the fifth, but Ortiz doubled and scored to give New Britain a 3-2 lead.  The Mets continued to threaten, getting two on in the sixth and two on in the seventh, but they could not tie the score.

Of note:  Corey Wimberly was 1-for-2 with a run.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.

TAMPA AT FORT MYERS

Rained out.

BINGHAMTON 7, CEDAR RAPIDS 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in three.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Chad Christensen was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

Pitching star:  Felix Jorge pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Mike Fish was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Angel Rosa was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Ryan Etsell struck out ten in seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk.

The game:  Two errors and a Rosa two-run double gave Burlington a 3-0 lead after one.  Joel Licon pulled off what appears to be a straight steal of home in a two-run third to cut the lead to 3-2.  An error and a passed ball led to a Bee run in the fourth,   Brandon Bayardi had an RBI triple and later came around to score for a two-run fifth, and Fish tripled in a run in the sixth to put Burlington ahead 7-2.  Cedar Rapids got back into the game in the eighth, as Haar delivered a bases-loaded triple and scored on a Jason Kanzler single.  He got to second with two out, but that was as close as the Kernels would come to tying the score.

Of note:  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Kanzler was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Josue Montanez struck out seven in four innings, giving up four unearned runs on four hits and a walk.

DSL ORIOLES1 8, DSL TWINS 1

Batting stars:  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with a run.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Starter Jadison Jimenez struck out five in three innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.  Johan Quesada struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.  Luis Hernandez pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Robertico Medina was 1-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in three.  Ricardo Andujar was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Francisco Jimenez pitched six shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  It was actually close until the end.  Andujar singled in a run in the third and a run scored on a ground out in the fourth to put the Orioles1 ahead 2-0.  The score stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when the Twins put together three two-out singles in the eighth to cut the lead to 2-1, but left the bases loaded.  In the ninth, the Orioles1 scored six times to put the game away.  They had four singles, a walk, and three hit batsmen in the inning.  Medina capped the inning with a two-run single.

Of note:  Gabriel A. Ynfante was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Roni Tapia was 0-for-4.  Eugenio Diaz was 0-for-4.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-3.
