Minor Details: Games of June 8

Close games that for the most part did not go the Twins' way.  Sam Fuld continues his rehab.  An excellent game by Jason Wheeler.

GWINNETT 4, ROCHESTER 2 IN GWINNETT

Batting stars:  Eric Farris was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.  Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-3 with a run.

Pitching star:  A. J. Achter retired all eight batters he faced, striking out three.

Opposition stars:  Steven Lerud was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Philip Gosselin was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Christian Bethancourt was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  Bethancourt doubled in a run in the first and Lerud and Gosselin each had an RBI double in the second to give Gwinnett a 3-0 lead.  In the third, Rochester scored twice on three singles, a bunt, and a passed ball to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Red Wings had several chances after that but could do nothing with them.  Joe Leonard tripled and scored in the sixth to give the Braves an insurance run.

Of note:  Deibinson Romero was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Brad Nelson was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Colabello was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Logan Darnell pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

BINGHAMTON 7, NEW BRITAIN 3 IN BINGHAMTON

Batting stars:  Sam Fuld was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Jim Fuller pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Travis Taijeron was 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs.  Kevin Plawecki was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Kyle Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

The game:  An error brought home two runs in the third to give Binghamton a 2-1 lead.  Each teams scored once in the fifth.  Vargas tied the game in the seventh with an RBI single, but New Britain was denied a chance to take the lead when Nate Hanson was thrown out trying tos core from second on the hit.  In the eighth, the Mets put together a double, two singles, a walk, another single, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to score four times and take control of the game.

Of note:  Hanson was 1-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4.

JUPITER 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN JUPITER

Batting star:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth.

Pitching star:  Jason Wheeler struck out eight in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Trevor Williams pitched eight shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Anthony Gomez was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

The game:  Neither side had a hit until the third.  The game was scoreless through seven.  In the eighth, Jupiter broke through for three, getting RBI singles from Gomez and Matt Juengel and a run-scoring double by Blake Barber.  Fort Myers came back in the ninth, starting the inning with a walk and a Polanco two-run homer, but the next three batters went out to end the game.

Of note:  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, KANE COUNTY 2 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Jason Kanzler was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Joel Licon was 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks.  Alex Muren struck out two in two perfect innings.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Ben Carhart was 3-for-4 with a run.  Danny Lockhart was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run.

The game:  All the scoring took place in the first two innings.  Mitch Garver singled in a run in the first to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first, Yasiel Balaguert doubled in the tying run and a sacrifice fly put Kane County up 2-1.  In the second, Bryan Haar singled, Kanzler tripled to tie it up, and a sacrifice fly put the Kernels up 3-2.  The Cougars got a pair of one-out singles in the sixth and again put two on in the ninth, but did not get a man to third base.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 0-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4 with a run.  Garver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
