FMD: Mid-June

Seems I'm as good at putting together a WGOM summer mix as I am at voting for the Half-Bakef Hall of Fame.
So...
Last week to nominate songs for the summer mix!

    1. Johnny Cash American Recordings Series buddies!
Is that the new Angel Olsen album? I've been meaning to check her and Sturgill Simpson.

      1. Woo!

It's not the new album, but it's on my List of Desired Things and my birthday is coming up next month, so I suspect I'll have it soon. Sharon Van Etten is on that list as well.

        1. OK, SVE is another one. I can't imagine I'll get into it like Tramp, but I'll definitely give her the chance to prove me wrong.

          1. Are We There is harrowing listen, but filled moments of real beauty. It continues to grow on me, but Tramp might always be the better record. Also, if you haven't heard Epic (her second release), you really should. So many great songs.

    1. I need to remember to get the good Eels songs on my iPod.
None of this "Shootenanny!" junk. "Souljacker" is basically where I think their good early stage ended. I'm not sure if there's anything good on the other side of "Shootenanny!"

        1. I'm a big fan of Wonderful, Glorious.

I like Blinking Lights too. I once listened to that whole double album on a rainy drive to the lake. If there is a way to make a happy occasion depressing, that is it. "God's Silence" puts it over the top.

      1. I liked Beautiful Freak and Souljacker but I didn't get into Blinking Lights much. I think I was suffering from Eel-fatigue at that point and I've never made it back to give it a second chance.

        1. When I listen to Beautiful Freak so much sounds dated to my ears. Over-DustBrothersed, Over-Becked. But I do love some of the songs.
Daisies of the Galaxy and Electo-Shock Blues were also good. Of those, I feel they're lacking something from really being really good as an album, but there was probably enough material for a great double-album from the first three albums, especially if you include "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues". "I Like Birds" from Daisies is a personal fave.
Souljacker is probably best single album up to that time.

There are some good songs on E's solo albums (I have both) and the MC Honky album, too. But a lot of overly twee on the E albums.

  4. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
    Metallica - Master of Puppets
Neil Young - Heart of Gold
Tesla - The Way It Is
    The Pixies - Mr. Grieves
    Wilco - Red-Eyed and Blue
Tim Capello - I Still Believe
    Pearl Jam - Alive
Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man
The Grateful Dead - Uncle John's Band

  5. 1. That's Alright Mama - Elvis Presley - Sun Sessions
    2. Grand Central Station, March 18, 1977 - Steve Forbert - Alive on Arrival
    3. Bad Moon Rising - CCR - Chronicle, Vol. 1
    4. Green Shirt - the other Elvis - Armed Forces
    5. Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School - Warren Zevon - Bad Luck...
    6. The Conqueror - Bunny Wailer - Roots Radics Rockers Reggae

^ - Living Room - Grouper - The Man Who Died In His Boat

    * - Wicked Soldier - Tonic - Lemon Parade
( - Bleeders - The Wallflowers - Bringing Down the Horse
) - Mota - The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre

    1. I keep forgetting to check out Grouper. I think that's mostly because the one time I listened to her music, I was not in the mood for what she was doing. The bits and pieces I've heard since then have all entranced me, but I've never dug back into her full albums.

      1. She opened for Animal Collective (touring Merriweather). I don't think that much of the audience realized there was someone on stage.
(And even that option would have been better than an earlier opening act, Ariel Pink.)

I've had difficulty getting into her stuff as well. I started with AIA.

  7. An early example of my gurl girl singer obsession, I wore out my cassette copy of the jangle-pop Brits release from 1990.
