June 27, 2014: Opportunity

The Milkmaid continues to inch near a much better-paying job, I'm releasing my game in a few days and I've been (somewhat informally) asked to write a show to be produced by my alma mater next year. Could be a good week, if any of this pans out.

    1. Good luck to him. It'd be cool if he could pull a Lew Ford and get back to the majors.

    2. Awesome, thanks!
Too bad the O's don't have any games left in MN. I'd love to wear my jersey and get a seat by the bullpen to show him if he does make it back (per JeffA's hope).

  1. The Twins started this roadtrip only 5 games out of first place. Now they are 8 games back and its only Friday. oof.
Can we go back to beating the White Sox?

      1. Heh, your spoiler title- I'm pretty sure that's what Gardy says when he hands his lineup sheet to the ump.

  2. As long as the Timberwolves sell draft picks, I cannot believe they are seriously trying to win.

Love has come off as a total jerk but the Wolves keep trying to top him.

    1. I went to bed last night after they sold #44 because I was tired and in danger of getting really, really drunk. I saw when I woke up that they also sold the next one, so I was justified in my decision. Man, this team, I tell ya.

My brother lives in San Antonio so maybe I'll use that as my justification for rooting for them.

      1. Because the average mid-second round pick is so valuable? Oh wait, I remember now. Bill Simmons said that they have a 60 pct chance of being in the top 3 best players taken in the draft!!!1111one111!!!

I don't see anything all that worth criticizing in selling 2nd-round picks. For every Mario Chalmers that the Wolves have dumped, they've picked a dozen other guys who weren't gonna make it in the league. The 2nd round is a huge crap shoot, and gets dramatically crap-shootier the further into the round you go.

By far the most successful 2nd round picks in the Wolves history have been Doug West (38th), Howard Eisley (30th), Craig Smith (36th), Pek (31st), and Chalmers (34th). Basically the ONLY successful 2nd round picks they've had.

        1. But those picks are the perfect place to take a Euro-stash. I could understand selling one of the picks, but selling both smacks of just not giving a crap/taking the lazy way out when they couldn't be traded.

          1. I edited while you were replying. The Euro-stash is a great idea, but still a craptastic crap shoot.

            1. case in point: the Spurs. DeJuan Blair (37th), Nando de Colo (53rd), Goran Dragic (45th), Luis Scola (55th), Manu (57th), Tony Massenburg (43rd) are their notable second-rounders back to 1990. That's an incredible record of success, but pretty much the exception that proves the rule. Six good players in 24 years.

              1. I get that its a crap shoot and they probably weren't going to get anything useful out of those picks, but my biggest problem with them selling is that everything Glen does seems to be for comfort or from being cheap. If this was done by a team that has had general front office competence, I'd have overlooked it, but it's Timberwolves. The Wolves are exactly the sort of organization that should be taking flyers on Euro-stashes late in the 2nd round, especially when they have three picks there.

        2. Under that logic, they should just auction off alltheir picks.

If it is about making money, i get it. But it is obviously not about winning.

        3. Russ Smith was still available at 44. Watch him become an effective (and exciting) back-up point guard. Eff you, Taylor Corp.

    1. If MLB allowed players to grab a microphone and cut wrestling-like promos I might rethink my attitude towards AJ.

    AMR has a doppelganger?

  4. It was really weird to have a "Matt Novak" retweeted by someone I follow (Mac Wilson) and then realize it wasn't Philosofer.
