Game 87: Yankees @ Twins

In case you haven't heard about it, Derek Jeter is retiring and today is his last (regular season) game in Minnesota. For some reason, the Twins figured the most appropriate home for the last Second Base bag used at the Metrodome was Jeter's closet. I know there haven't been a ton of quality players manning the middle for the home team in the past 15+ years, but c'mon, Derek F*cking Jeter?! It's a nice gesture for a retiring player, but I'd prefer they hang on to that piece of memorabilia for someone who actually played more than 30 games in that building.

Since moving to Target Field, the Twins have not won back-to-back home games against New York. They last beat the Yankees in consecutive games at home six years ago. Let's hope that changes today.

    1. Yay, I get to see some of this one too. I guess there is one good thing about the Yankees coming to town.

      1. I'm actually liking Cal Ripken in the booth so far. Really good insights. If he works on his on air manner a little more, gets a little more comfortable, he could be really good to listen to.

        1. I agree. Ron Darling is pretty good too.
Ernie Johnson is better at calling basketball games.

  1. What I like about TBS's coverage is they have the K-zone graphic always up.

  2. Dazzle thought the Twins should've gotten the recording of Bob Sheppard introducing Derek Jeter. Good grief. At least now I know I was right to call this the Derek Jeter Canonization Tour.

  3. I don't imagine we can actually climb out of the hole, but it's nice to see the boys pick up a couple of runs, at least.

  4. Ugh. 9 runs against in four. Also, Derek Jeter is the best Jeter playing today.

  5. Not that a blow-out is ever good, but the especially bad thing about this one is that it gives the broadcasters even more time to God up Derek Jeter.

  6. You hear it all the time, but I wonder how effective the whole "take pitches when you're behind because you need baserunners" thing is. I get it--you want to give the pitcher a chance to walk you--but wouldn't that be just as true any time? In fact, it seems like when you're way behind, you might do better to swing early in the count, because the pitcher wants to avoid falling behind and is perhaps more likely to just throw you a fastball for a strike. I'm just wondering if there's any evidence out there that says taking pitches when you're behind actually pays off.

    1. Maybe its an old baseball idiom from the old days. One day Connie Mack's team was down 10-0 and he said something like "take pitches boys" and the A's made a sterling comeback and won 13-10. Since Connie Mack sid it, its taken as gospel and has been passed down through the years.

  7. It would really be nice if the pitcher happened to throw one where Arcia is swinging.

  8. 9th inning of the last game of the series. Im ok with a standing ovation for Jeter.

  9. My dream is that the Twins score two in the bottom of the ninth and then put men on second and third with two out. The batter hits an easy ground ball to Jeter, he boots it, both runs score, and the Twins win the game.

    1. Not possible, but I feel like it would be hilarious if, in this scenario, it was Nunez who hit the grounder to Jeter.

    2. I'd love to see a lot of variations on this, but I would really have liked to see him make a jump throw from short (with plenty of time) that sails over the first baseman's head, and then on the subsequent perfect throw from the right fielder who tracked it down, he cuts it off and throws wildly to home.

  10. 3400 career hits for Jeter. He has a good chance of passing 3 more guys on the all time hits list before the season is done

    Tris Speaker 3514
    Cap Anson 3435
    Honus Wagner 3420
    Carl Yastrzemski 3419

Passing The Grey Eagle might be a stretch

  11. Well, at least we made them work for it. It's not much, but at least it's something. It's better than rolling over and giving up, anyway.

    1. For the most part, the Twins have fought the entire game.
Its just too many times, but not as many as last year, the starting pitcher gives about about 764 runs.
