Minor Details: Games of July 5

The Red Wings field like the DSL Twins.  Two pitchers make identical starts for New Britain.  Felix Jorge and Tanner English lead Elizabethton to the only Twins win.

LEHIGH VALLEY 9, ROCHESTER 8 IN ROCHESTER (16 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chris Rahl was 2-for-6 with a home run (his sixth) and three RBIs.  Chris Herrmann was 2-forr-7 with two doubles annd a walk, scorrinng once.  Wilkin Ramirez was 2-for-7 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Edgar Ibarra pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  Michael Tonkin pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Russ Canzler was 4-for-7 with two home runs (his fourth and fifth), a double, and a walk, scoring three times.  Maikel Franco was 3-for-8 with a double and a home run (his sixth), driving in three.  Leandro Castro was 3-for-8 with two runs and an RBI.

The game:  Rochester led early, with an Eric Farris double putting the Red Wings up 4-2 after five.  Franco's two-run homer tied it in the sixth and two errors led to two Lehigh Valley runs in the seventh to give the IronPigs a 6-4 lead.  It was 7-6 after eight, but Ramirez delivered an RBI single to tie it in the ninth.  The Red Wings had the bases loaded, but could not score the winning run.  Each team got a solo homer in the fourteenth to keep the score tied.  In the sixteenth, three singles and an error allowed the winning run to score.  Rochester went down in order in the bottom of the sixteenth.

Of note:  Farris was 2-for-6 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Pedro Florimon was 1-for-6 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Scott Diamond pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Rochester made six errors in the game, leading to four unearned runs.

PORTLAND 4, NEW BRITAIN 0 IN PORTLAND (GAME 1--7 INNINGS

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with a double.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-3.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Shannon Wilkerson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Mike McCarthy struck out five in five innings, allowing three hits and a walk.  Robby Scott pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.

The game:  Derrik Gibson doubled and scored to give Portland a 1-0 lead in the first.  In the fourth, David Chester doubled in one run and Wilkerson singled in two to give the Sea Dogs a 4-0 lead.  New Britain had men on first and second with none out in both the second and the fifth but could do nothing with them.

Of note:  Tony Thomas was 0-for-3.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-3.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Virgil Vasquez pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings.

PORTLAND 4, NEW BRITAIN 2 IN PORTLAND

Batting stars:  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs.  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Sean Coyle was 2-for-2 with a home run (his eleventh) and a walk, driving in four.  Peter Hissey was 3-for-3 with a double.  Derrik Gibson was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put New Britain on the board in the first, but Coyle hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give Portland a 2-1 lead.  Coyle's two-run single in the second made it 4-1.  The Rock Cats got one in the sixth, and it came the same way as their run in the first:  Hicks singled, Rosario doubled, and Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly.  The last six New Britain batters were retired.

Of note:  Rodriguez was 0-for-1 with two RBIs.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Pat Dean pitched a complete game with the same numbers Vasquez had in the first game:  four runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings.

CHARLOTTE 3, FORT MYERS 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Starter Brett Lee pitched three innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and four walks with two strikeouts.  Brian Gilbert pitched two shutout innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two walks.

Opposition stars:  Justin O'Conner was 2-for-5 with a home run (his sixth), scoring twice.  Austin Pruitt struck out eight in 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk.

The game:  Charlotte got two in the third and O'Conner homered in the seventh to give the Stone Crabs a 3-0 lead.  RBI singles by Goodrum and Jorge Polanco cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.  Fort Myers had men on first and second with two out, but could do no more damage.  They put men on first and second with two out in the eighth as well, but that was as close as they would come.

Of note:  Polanco was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 1-for-5.  Nate Roberts was 1-for-4 with a double.  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-4 with a double.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4.  Alex Wimmers pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and two walks with one strikeout.

BELOIT 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting star:  Jon Murphy was 0-for-1 with three walks.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Chris Mazza pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Hudson Boyd pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jaycob Brugman was 2-for-5 with a home run (his eighth) and two RBIs.  B. J. Boyd was 2-for-4 with a run.  Matt Stalcup pitched four innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma tripled in a run and later scored to give Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead in the first.  Brugman homered in the second and Beloit took the lead with a four-run second.  Luis Baez had a two-run single in the inning and the Kernels helped out with two errors and a hit batsman.  Brugman singled in a run in the fourth to make it 6-2.  Cedar Rapids did not threaten to get back into the game.

Of note:  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Bryan Haar was 0-for-4 with a run.  Starter Kohl Stewart struck out three in 2.2 innings, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits.

ELIZABETHTON 1, BLUEFIELD 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Nick Gordon was 3-for-4.  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-3 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge struck out five in five innings, giving up two hits and three walks.  C. K. Irby pitched two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Jake Reed struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Jesus Tinoco struck out seven in six innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk.  Daniel Lietz struck out three in two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  English led off the bottom of the first with a home run and it was the only run of the game.  Bluefield put two on in the first, fourth, and fifth, but could do nothing with them.

Of note:  Max Murphy was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Austin Diemer was 0-for-3.

GCL RED SOX 3, GCL TWINS 0 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Starter Wilfredy Liranzo struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Seth Wagner struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and one walk.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Rafael Devers was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Javier Rodriguez pitched four innings, allowing one hit and six walks with two strikeouts.  Kelvin Heras pitched four innings, allowing two hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  Joseph Monge tripled in a run in the third, Javier Guerra homered in the fourth, and Victor Acosta singled in a run in the sixth.  The Twins best scoring chance came in the fourth, when a walk, a single, and a walk loaded the bases with one out.  A double play ended the inning.  They also got a man to third with two out in the seventh.

Of note:  Logan Wade was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Rafael P. Valera was 0-for-4.  Rainis Silva was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Jack Barrie was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Nelson Molina was 0-for-2 with a walk.

DSL ORIOLES1 9, DSL TWINS 2 AT ORIOLES1

Batting star:  Roni Tapia was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Johan Quezada struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Argenis Silva pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Fabian Vizcaino was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Byron Guerra was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Rauel Acosta was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  The Orioles1 scored three in the second to go up 3-0.  Antonio Tovar had a two-run single in the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but Guerra's RBI triple and two Twins errors led to another three-run inning for the Orioles1 in the fourth, making the score 6-2.  The Orioles1 added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4 with a run.  Junior Amarante was 0-for-4.  Tovar was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Jorge Parra was 1-for-4.  Starter Luis Hernandez struck out five in 3.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks.  The Twins made six errors in the game.

  1. Interesting about Florimon since he was sent out last week, he has played SS, 3B, and 2B.

    Increasing his trade value, I hope.

    1. It's hard for me to believe Florimon has any trade value, but we got something for Drew Butera, so I guess it's possible.
