  1. Six appointments were added to my calendar for today while I was out of the office between Thursday and Monday. The people stopping by to say "Sorry you have such a busy day today!" can stop now so I can get the catch-up work done that I was supposed to be doing today.

    1. It seems to be a rule of life that people will stop by just to chat on the days you have the least amount of time to do so.

  2. From Baseball Prospectus' Hit List:

Chris Parmelee is the first player this year to play both first base and center field in a game, but the first in 20 years to do it on a dare.

Now I'm curious what other players have played first and center in the same game. Can't be a real long list, can it?

    1. Off the top of my head because I have a silly memory, I would guess:

      Joe Pepitone
      Mickey Mantle
Johnny Moses (thanks for the 1987 Diamond Mind disc, Beau!)
      Nick Swisher
      Darin Erstad
      Stan Musial

        1. Don't forget guys like Campaneris who played all 9 positions as a stunt.

          1. I didn't remember the name, but I remembered the stunt. I'm guessing the catcher/centerfield combo in the same game is probably the rarest (excluding pitchers, just because).

            1. The Repository obliges:

On September 22, 1968, Tovar became the second player after Bert Campaneris (Kansas City Athletics, 1965) to play all nine fielding positions in a game. The two were later joined by Scott Sheldon (Texas Rangers, 2000) and Shane Halter (Detroit Tigers, 2000) as the only four players in MLB history to have accomplished the feat.[2][9][10][11] Tovar started the game on the mound against Oakland and pitched one scoreless inning in which he struck out Reggie Jackson. As fate would have it, the first batter he faced was Campaneris.

      1. Interesting- I would have thought the number of games and the number of players who'd done it would have been closer to 1:1, but I guess it makes sense that if the manager is willing to use a guy to play both those positions in an emergency, then the manager might be more likely to put himself in similar positions where he'll have to do it again.

    2. Those double switches in non-DH games will cause managers to do a lot of crazy things, especially when trailing late in a game. If a guy has ever played the OF, then he can play CF for an inning or two. Plus, first base is a place pretty much anyone can play for an inning or two.

    1. Sheenie and I talked about it, but I didn't want to commit myself during the World Cup final.

  3. Well, somehow we survived the trip to Boston, although we had to drive my sil's crap into a smaller suitcase. Trying to carry six carry ons, three checked bags and two car seats along with two kids is a God damned awful thing. Of course, the one thing we forgot was the baubles birth certificate. The lady at the southwest counter was a little crabby about it, but otherwise let him get his boarding document.

The best news was that we got a free upgrade to a full size car that fit everything in the trunk.

    1. Here's to the "looking overwhelmed but not too proud to accept a little charity" upgrade!

  4. Caught the last 5 minutes of what seemed like an interesting program on FSN. It was Bert Blyleven and Glen Perkins talking about pitching and how Perkin grips his pitches. I hope FSN replays that.
