Minor Details: Games of July 21

A huge day for Mitch Garver!  An eight-run inning for the DSL Twins!  A dominant performance by Chih-Wei Hu!

DURHAM 5, ROCHESTER 1 IN DURHAM

Batting stars:  Nate Hanson was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.  Chris Rahl was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Enny Romero pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Mike Fontenot was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Hak-Ju Lee was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

The game:  There was no score until the fourth, when Jeremy Moore doubled in a run.  Rochester tied it in the fifth when Eric Farris singled in a run, but Durham took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  A three-run seventh, highlighted by Fontenot's two-run double, put the Bulls in control of the game.  The Red Wings had plenty of chances, getting nine hits and three walks, but they stranded nine and went 1-for-8 with men in scoring position.

Of note:  Deibinson Romero was 1-for-4.  Wilkin Ramirez was 0-for-4.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Sean Gilmartin struck out nine in six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and no walks.

NEW BRITAIN 4, ALTOONA 3 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Matt Koch was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two walks.  Mike Kvasnicka was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Tony Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.

Pitching stars:  Tyler Duffey struck out nine in seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and no walks.  Cole Johnson pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Dan Gamache was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, his second.  Willy Garcia was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  Gamache hit a two-run homer in the second to put Altoona up 2-0, but New Britain got the runs right back in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring ground out and a Stephen Wickens RBI single.  The Rock Cats took the lead on a balk in the fourth and got an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Aaron Hicks.  They needed it, because back-to-back doubles by Garcia and Paulino made it 4-3 in the eighth.  The Curve had the tying run on second with one out, but their last five batters were retired.

Of note:  Hicks was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Eddie Rosario was 0-for-5.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-2 with three walks.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.

FORT MYERS 4, BREVARD COUNTY 2 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Pitching stars:  Matt Tomshaw pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Brian Gilbert struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Cameron Garfield was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Nathan Orf was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Michael Strong pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts.

The game:  Mike Garza's RBI double and a sacrifice fly put Brevard County up 2-0 in the top of the fourth.  Fort Myers got the runs right back in the bottom of the fourth on RBI doubles by Walker II and Mike Gonzales.  In the sixth, the Miracle loaded the bases with none out on a walk, a single, and a walk.  A ground out scored one and Stuart Turner singled in another to put Fort Myers up 4-2.  The Manatees got only one hit after that but still managed to load the bases with two out in the seventh on two walks and an error.  A strikeout ended the threat.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-4.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, FORT WAYNE 1 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 3-for-4 with three home runs (his tenth, eleventh, and twelfth), driving in five.  J. D. Williams was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Bryan Haar was 3-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu struck out six in six innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and two walks.  Brandon Bixler struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks.  Dallas Gallant struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Josh Richardson pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

The game:  Garver hit a two-run homer in the first to put Cedar Rapids up 2-0.  He hit another two-run homer in the third to make it 4-0.  Williams doubled and scored in the fourth to put the Kernels in front 5-0.  The lone Fort Wayne run scored in the sixth on a walk and an error.  Cedar Rapids closed out the scoring with a three-run eighth.  Garver hit another home run and Williams and Engelb Vielma had RBI singles.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 0-for-5.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with a run.  Alex Swim was 0-for-4.

ELIZABETHTON 4, BURLINGTON 3 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Josue Montanez struck out two in two shutout innings.  Keaton Steele had a perfect perfect inning, striking out all three men he faced.  Dereck Rodriguez pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Leland Clemmons was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer.  Ryan Dale was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Dylan Sons struck out three in three innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk.

The game:  Fernandez had an RBI double in a two-run first that put Elizabethton up 2-0.  Dale's RBI single and a two-run homer by Clemmons gave Burlington a 3-2 advantage.  Murphy singled in a run in the fifth to tie it.  In the seventh, Jeremias Pineda singled, stole second, and scored on a Murphy single to give the Twins a 4-3 lead.  The last eight Royals batters were retired.

Of note:  Pineda was 1-for-4 with a run.  Tyler Kuresa was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Stephen Gonsalves pitched five innings, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

GCL ORIOLES 7, GCL TWINS 2 AT ORIOLES

Batting stars:  Roberto Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Jonah Heim was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs.  Alejandro Juvier was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.  Jomar Reyes was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run.

The game:  Ronarsy Ledesma hit a two-run homer in the first to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.  The Twins got on the board in the third on a Gonzalez RBI single, but the Orioles scored three in the fourth to take control of the game.

Of note:  Frank Encarnacion was 0-for-4.  Five of the starters for the GCL Twins are batting below .200, two below .150, and one below .100.  Their team batting average is .225.  Starter Brandon Easton struck out four in four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and no walks.

DSL TWINS 10, DSL WHITE SOX 1 AT WHITE SOX

Batting stars:  Emmanuel Morel was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in four.  Edgar Herrera was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Roni Tapia was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Jose Ramirez struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.  Carlos Aponte pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout.  Erick Balbuena pitched two shutout innings, giving up two walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Hanleth Otano was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.  Maiker Feliz was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Morel singled in a run in the third to put the Twins up 1-0.  Herrera doubled one home in the fifth to make it 2-0.  The White Sox got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on back-to-back doubles by Feliz and Otano to cut the lead to 2-1.  The Twins then took control with an eight-run sixth.  Morel had a three-run triple in the inning, which also featured four singles, a double, a walk, a hit batsman, and an error.

Of note:  Junior Amarante was 0-for-2.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-5.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-4 with two runs.

    1. He pitched well for six innings, giving up two runs on four hits. The seventh opened with a single and an error, he was replaced, and the bullpen couldn't pick him up.
