Minor Details: Games of July 24

Kennys Vargas and Jose Berrios lead New Britain.  Byron Buxton returns to the Fort Myers lineup.  A walkoff walk for the GCL Twins.

ROCHESTER AT DURHAM

The game was suspended after three and a half innings with Rochester leading 1-0.

NEW BRITAIN 7, PORTLAND 1 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting stars:  Kennys Vargas was 3-for-3 with a grand slam (his seventeenth homer), a double, and two walks, scoring twice.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Brad Boyer was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios pitched seven innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Cole Johnson struck out two in two perfect innings.

Opposition star:  Blake Swihart was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  In the third, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two down and Vargas hit a grand slam to put New Britain ahead 4-0.  That was basically the game right there.  Swihart doubled and scored in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1, but two walks and a Hicks RBI single got the run back in the bottom of the fourth.  Portland did not get a baserunner after Swihart's double leading off the fourth, as their last eighteen batters were retired.

Of note:  Tony Thomas was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-5.

TAMPA 6, FORT MYERS 1 IN TAMPA

Batting stars:  Travis Harrison was 1-for-3 with a run.  Mike Gonzales was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Brian Gilbert pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Caleb Smith pitched six innings, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Greg Bird was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his seventh) and a walk.  Anderson Feliz was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

The game:  An RBI double by Danny Oh and a run-scoring single by Jose Rosario put Tampa ahead 2-0 in the third.  Feliz hit a two-out two-run triple in the fourth to make it 4-0.  Gonzales singled in the lone Fort Myers run in the fifth, but the Yankees got two more in the bottom of the fifth on Bird's two-run homer.  The Miracle got only one hit after that and had only three in the game.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 0-for-4.  Levi Michael was 0-for-4.  Nate Roberts was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Starter D. J. Baxendale struck out five in five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and one walk.

BOWLING GREEN 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN BOWLING GREEN

Batting star:  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Starter Lewis Thorpe struck out three in three innings, giving  up two unearned runs on four hits and four walks.  Chris Mazza struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Hudson Boyd struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.

The game:  Three walks and two errors allowed Bowling Green to score twice in the first inning, and that was all the runs they would need.  The lone Cedar Rapids run came in the sixth, when Swim had an RBI double.  The Kernels had the bases loaded with one out in that inning, but a double play ended the threat.  Cedar Rapids had lots of chances, getting six hits and drawing six walks, but went 1-for-9 with men in scoring position and stranded ten runners.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-1 with a walk before being removed in the fourth inning for no apparent reason.

ELIZABETHTON 3, BLUEFIELD 2 IN BLUEFIELD

Batting stars:  Jorge Fernandez was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge struck out eight in six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.  Josue Montanez struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up no runs and no hits.  Randy LeBlanc struck out three in two scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Joey Aquino struck out six in six innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks.  Rowdy Tellez was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

The game:  Tellez doubled in a run in the first to put Bluefield up 1-0.  Fernandez had an RBI single in the second to tie it 1-1.  Tellez got another RBI, this time with a single, in the sixth inning to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.  In the seventh, Kuresa singled, Trey Vavra doubled, and Fernandez again came through, this time with a two-run single to put the Twins in front 3-2.  Bluefield did not get a man past first after that.

Of note:  Jeremias Pineda was 0-for-5.  Max Murphy was 0-for-4.

GCL TWINS 4, GCL ORIOLES 3 AT TWINS (10 INNINGS)

Pitching stars:  Alexis Tapia pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Jomar Reyes was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  In the third, the Twins had five consecutive batters reach after two were out, getting RBI singles by Baez and Joel Polanco along with an error to take a 3-0 lead.  In the sixth, Reyes had an RBI triple and later scored to cut the lead to 3-2.  In the eighth, Henry Urrutia scored all the way from first on a pickoff error to tie the score at three.  In the tenth, Guzman led off with a walk and Baez singled.  A pickoff error moved the runners to second and third, leading to an intentional walk to Amaurys Minier.  Polanco was then accidentally walked to bring home the winning run.

Of note:  Minier was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Polanco was 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.

Opposition stars:  Pabel Manzanero was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Derek Capitillo was 2-for-5 with a run.  Jairo Martinez struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

The game:  Two Reds errors helped the Twins take a 2-0 lead in the first.  Manzanero doubled home a run in the second to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the bottom of the second, Arraez came through with a two-run single to give the Twins a 4-1 advantage.  The first five Reds reached in the third, cutting the margin to 4-3 and leaving the bases loaded with none out.  Two popups and a ground out ended the threat.  The Reds got only one hit after that, a leadoff single in the fourth.

  1. May started the rain-delayed game, which means he only pitched 3 innings, which will delay his ability to be stretched out after coming back his leg injury and will mean it will be that much longer before the Twins will call him up.

    1. I'm not sure how anxious the Twins are to call May up anyway, but yes, this didn't help.

  2. If Hughes can't make his start, Berrios would be on his normal rest and the Twins have a 40-man roster spot available. Hmmmm. Plus, May had a short start and Meyer is being held to 85 pitches or 6 innings.

    1. I would definitely tune in for a Berrios start. Heck, I'd maybe even try to get tickets.

    2. I'd be stunned if the Twins brought up Berrios. Stunned in a good way, but stunned.
