July 28, 2014: Tightrope

We're basically at the point where we have to enroll our kids in school here despite not knowing which of three states we'll be living in. After a very busy summer it is starting to look, though, like there will be no move at all.

  1. You should just register the kids for school in Minnesota. Put your feet to the fire.

    1. Thanks for sharing! I actually picked up a birthday present from one of the distilleries highlighted in the article (High West - a bottle of Barreled Manhattan) thinking they'd distilled the rye themselves. It was good, but I'm happier supporting someone who has a hand in the entire process...and making my own Manhattans.

edit: and I recognized 1, 2, & 8 as well, but it only gave me credit for 3/8.

  2. Today's the centennary of the beginning of "The War to End All Wars."

    If only.

        1. I was referring more to the fact that The Great War is largely forgotten in the U.S., probably because it was a little more complex than us vs. the Nazi's (as was World War II); but I have heard the argument that it was really the same war with a break to grow more soldiers in the middle

          1. Isn't the predominant theory that Germany was left so crippled that it became a breeding ground for something like the Nazi party to form? What was the alternative and would it have mattered?

            1. Punished and humiliated, but not crippled enough so that the Nazis (or something like them) couldn't come along and build up their military enough to be an issue 20 years down the road.

              1. the popular theory seems to have been that the Treaty of Versailles was crippling and humiliating to Germany. But I think the reality is more along the lines of the Great Depression, and policy choices made by Hindenburg's government, crushed the German economy and set the stage for Hitler's rise.

    1. meh. Defensive liability, his offense has been in decline for several years, and he'll be in his age-32 season. Maybe an improvement over JJ, but not much.

  3. So, I'm feeling pretty good about the idea that we may have seen the end of JJ Barea wrecking fourth quarters in a wolves uniform.

    1. From Gleeman:

At age 26 he once again looks capable of being a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter thanks to Pittsburgh getting him healthy, giving him some coaching on his mechanics, showing a little patience, and basically doing what Minnesota wouldn’t or couldn’t. And that’s become a familiar story for Twins fans

      .

      1. Because no pitcher ever had a surprising month of good performance despite not being good. Maybe we should wait for more than 50 innings before determining if the Pirates "fixed" Worley?

        1. Fair point and I agree it fits a little too neatly in "the Twins don't know what they are doing." narrative (of which I admit to perpetuating). But look at his minor league numbers. One could argue that Worley is performing now as expected. But yeah, let's see how Worley looks at the end of the season.

          1. Certainly. Also to note is that he moved back to the NL. There's increased parity thanks to the worst team moving to the AL, but he still gets a free out every nine innings.

  4. Buster Posey is wearing wedge pads on his calves. I don't recall seeing that before.
