Minor Details: Games of August 4

Scott Diamond gets his revenge on Rochester.  Adam Brett Walker II hits number XXII.  Errors sink the DSL Twins.

LOUISVILLE 5, ROCHESTER 1 IN LOUISVILLE

Batting stars:  Chris Rahl was 3-for-4 with a run.  Doug Bernier was 2-for-4 with a double.  Deibinson Romero was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Scott Diamond pitched 7.2 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Bryan Anderson was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Steve Selsky was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in two.

The game:  Jason Bourgeois doubled and scored to give Louisville a 1-0 lead after one.  Selsky's two-run double in the fourth made it 3-0.  The Bats added a run in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Neftali Soto and another in the eighth on a Hernan Iribarren RBI single.  Rahl singled and scored the only Rochester run in the ninth.  The Red Wings drew three consecutive two-out walks to bring the tying run up to bat, but a fly out ended the game.

Of note:  Josmil Pinto pinch-hit and was 0-for-1.  Wilkin Ramirez was 1-for-4.  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Herrmann was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Starter Trevor May pitched six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 12, LAKELAND 2 IN LAKELAND

Batting stars:  Travis Harrison was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and two walks, scoring three times and driving in three.  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-6 with a home run (his twenty-second), driving in four.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Slegers pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.  Brandon Peterson struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.  Alex Muren pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Curt Powell was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.  Jeff McVaney was 1-for-4 with a home run, his ninth.

The game:  Walker II hit a three-run homer in the first to give Fort Myers a 3-0 lead.  Harrison led off the third with a home run and Jason Kanzler hit a two-run homer later in the inning to make the score 6-0.  Grimes hit a two-run homer in the fifth to boost the margin to 8-0.  Powell tripled and scored in the fifth and McVaney hit a homer in the sixth to cut the margin to 8-2, but Harrison hit a two-run single in a four-run Miracle eighth to close out the scoring.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs.  Max Kepler was 1-for-6 with a double.  Stuart Turner was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

WISCONSIN 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting star:  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a home run (his eighth) and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching stars:  Lewis Thorpe struck out six in four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks.  Jared Wilson struck out two in two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits.  Chris Mazza struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Chris McFarland was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs.  Michael Ratterree was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Angel Ortega was 2-for-3 with a double.

The game:  A single, two walks, a wild pitch, and an error brought home two Wisconsin runs in the fourth.  In the bottom of the fourth, Alex Swim singled in a run and another scored on a wild pitch to tie it at two.  Ratterree singled home a run in the fifth, but Christensen homered to tie it at three after six.  In the ninth, a single, a double, and a sacrifice fly gave Wisconsin a 4-3 lead.  Cedar Rapids got a one-out single in the ninth but could do nothing with it.

Of note:  Ryan Walker was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a run.  Swim was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Max Murphy was 1-for-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.

JOHNSON CITY 4, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Trey Vavra was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jeremias Pineda was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  C. K. Irby struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit.  Samuel Clay struck out four in two scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Juan Perez struck out four in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks.  Casey Grayson was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his second.  Casey Turgeon was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

The game:  Blake Drake singled in a run in the first to give Johnson City a 1-0 lead.  There was no more scoring until the sixth, when Grayson hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0.  A sacrifice fly got Elizabethton on the board in the seventh and another sacrifice fly made it 4-2 in the ninth.  The Twins had the tying run up to bat with none out in the ninth but did not come any closer.

Of note:  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4.  Jorge Fernandez was 0-for-3 with an RBI.  Derrick Penilla pitched 5.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

GCL ORIOLES AT GCL TWINS

DSL REDS 4, DSL TWINS 3 AT TWINS

Batting star:  Edgar Herrera was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Luis Hernandez struck out four in 3.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits.  Robener Cabrera pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout.  Juan Herrera pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Valentin Martinez was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Jairo Rodriguez struck out six in three shutout innings, giving up only a walk.

The game:  A single, a walk, and two errors plated a run for the Twins in the first.  Two singles, a wild pitch, and another error made it 2-0 after two.  In the fourth, an error, a walk, and a single filled the bases with Reds, and Gabriel Ovalle hit a single-plus-error to empty the bases, putting the Reds ahead 3-2.  Lewin Diaz singled in a run in the fifth to tie it at three, but in the seventh Carlos Rivero singled in a run to give the Reds a 4-3 advantage.  The Twins did not get a hit after that.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Junior Amarante was 0-for-3.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Diaz was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Starter Williams Ramirez struck out four in 3.2 innings, giving up three unearned runs on two hits and three walks.
