Minor Details: Games of August 17

A pair of walkoff victories.  Solid games for Jason Wheeler and Derrick Penilla.  We're getting closer to being caught up.

SYRACUSE 5, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 1--10 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Chris Herrmann was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double, scoring twice.  Pedro Florimon was 2-for-4 with two doubles.  Wilkin Ramirez was 1-for-2 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Logan Darnell pitched 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Lester Oliveros struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Emmanuel Burriss was 2-for-5 with a home run (his fifth), scoring twice and driving in two.  Tyler Moore was 1-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and two walks.  Brandon Laird was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

The game:  Burriss homered leading off the game.  Rochester got the run back in the second when Herrmann doubled and scored.  Moore homered in the top of the fourth to put Syracuse back in front, but Herrmann homered in the bottom of the fourth to tie it again.  There was no more scoring until the tenth.  A walk and a single put two on with one out and a single-plus-error by Burriss brought home two runs.  Laird singled in one more to make it 5-2.  The Red Wings could not get the tying run up to bat in the bottom of the tenth.

Of note:  Aaron Hicks was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Chris Colabello was 0-for-4.

SYRACUSE 7, ROCHESTER 3 IN ROCHESTER (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Josmil Pinto was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Doug Bernier was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  A. J. Achter struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Michael Tonkin struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Sandy Leon was 1-for-3 with a grand slam, his third homer.  Eury Perez was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Emmanuel Burriss was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  Syracuse put this one away early.  Three walks and two singles were followed by Leon's grand slam in the first inning to give the Chiefs a 6-0 lead.  Rochester got an RBI double in each of the next three innings--Eric Farris in the second, Chris Herrmann in the third, and Hicks in the fourth--to cut the lead to 6-3, but that was as close as the Red Wings came.  Eury Perez singled in a run in the fifth to close out the scoring.  Two singles and an error brought the tying run up to bat with two out in the fifth and Rochester had men on second and third with two out in the sixth, but nothing came of it.

Of note:  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-4.  Chris Colabello was 0-for-4.  Herrmann was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Starter Sean Gilmartin pitched four innings, giving up seven runs on four hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

NEW BRITAIN 7, HARRISBURG 2 IN NEW BRITAIN

Batting star:  Eddie Rosario was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, his sixth.

Pitching stars:  Jason Wheeler struck out nine in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Alex Wimmers struck out two in a perfect inning.  Jim Fuller pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits with one strikeout.

Opposition star:  Cole Leonida was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run.

The game:  Rosario opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the third.  It stayed 2-0 until the seventh, when New Britain scored five times to put the game out of reach.  Jorge Polanco singled in one, Corey Wimberly brought home three with a bases-loaded triple, and a sacrifice fly plated the fifth run.  Two doubles and an error put Harrisburg on the board with two in the eighth, but the Senators did not threaten to get back into the game.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Tony Thomas was 1-for-4 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, scoring once.  Mike Gonzales was 2-for-4 with a double.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Polanco was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

FORT MYERS 6, PALM BEACH 5 IN FORT MYERS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in two.  Niko Goodrum was 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with two walks.

Pitching stars:  Ethan Mildren struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.  Todd Van Steensel struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition star:  David Washington was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Fort Myers trailed 2-1 after five, but back-to-back doubles by Stuart Turner and Grimes and an RBI single by Aderlin Mejia put the Miracle up 3-2 in the sixth.  Mason Katz had an RBI single to tie it at three in the top of the eighth.  Goodrum singled in a run in a two-run bottom of the eighth to give Fort Myers a 5-3 advantage, but Palm Beach once again tied it in the ninth, getting a two-out two-run double by Luke Voit.  In the eleventh, a single and a walk put men on first and second with one out and Adam Brett Walker II delivered an RBI single to win the game for the Miracle.

Of note:  Mejia was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Travis Harrison was 1-for-4 with two walks and a run.  Walker II was 1-for-6 with an RBI.  Max Kepler was 2-for-5 with a run.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, PEORIA 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Logan Wade was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer (his seventh) and a double, scoring twice.  Mitch Garver was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk.  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-5 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Hudson Boyd struck out two in two perfect innings.  Brian Gilbert pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Steve Bean was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.  Juan Herrera was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

The game:  A hit batsman, two singles, and two doubles produced three runs for Peoria in the second, giving the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.  Cedar Rapids got on the board with one in the fourth.  In the fifth, two singles were followed by a three-run homer by Wade, giving the Kernels a 4-3 advantage.  The lead didn't last long, as Richy Pedroza tripled in a run in the sixth to tie it at four.  It stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth.  With two out, Wade doubled and scored on two wild pitches to win the game for Cedar Rapids.

Of note:  Chad Christensen was 0-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Alex Swim was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Max Murphy was 0-for-4.  Starter Ryan Eades pitched six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.

ELIZABETHTON 11, PRINCETON 0 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Jeremias Pineda was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in three.  Brian Navarreto was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, his second.  Trey Vavra was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Derrick Penilla struck out eight in six innings, giving up four hits and a walk.  Brandon Poulson struck out two in two innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Randy LeBlanc pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Thomas Milone was 2-for-4.  Kyle Bird struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  Two singles and a passed ball put Elizabethton on the board in the first.  RBI singles by Vavra and Alex Real made it 3-0 after three.  The Twins then put the game out of reach with a seven-run fourth.  Pineda brought home two with a double, Nick Gordon had a two-run single, and Navaretto hit a three-run homer.  The biggest Princeton threat came in the eighth, when the Rays opened the inning with a hit batsman, a walk, and a single, loading the bases with none out.  A strikeout and a pair of fly balls ended the threat.

Of note:  Gordon was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Tanner English was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.
