Minor Details: Games of August 20

Strong pitching for New Britain and Fort Myers.  The GCL Twins give one away.  And we're all caught up, for the moment.

BUFFALO 5, ROCHESTER 4 IN BUFFALO

Batting stars:  Chris Colabello was 3-for-5 with a home run, his tenth.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Aaron Thompson struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.  Deolis Guerra pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Matt Hague was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.  Darin Mastroianni was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and a walk.  Brad Mills pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  Mastroianni led off the bottom of the first with a home run, giving Buffalo a 1-0 lead.  Rochester tied it in the third, but the Bisons opened the fifth with three consecutive singles to take a 2-1 advantage.  Colabello homered leading off the sixth to tie the score again, but in the bottom of the sixth Hague delivered a two-out two-run single to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead.  Hicks singled in a run in the seventh and a wild pitch brought home a run in the eighth to tie it once more, this time at four.  The Red Wings put men on first and third with two out in the ninth, but couldn't score.  In the bottom of the ninth Anthony Gose singled with the bases loaded and two out to give the win to the Bisons.

Of note:  Pedro Florimon was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4.  Starter Alex Meyer struck out ten in 5.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and no walks.

NEW BRITAIN 7, RICHMOND 0 IN RICHMOND

Batting stars:  Matt Koch was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.  Nate Hanson was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  Tony Thomas was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Taylor Rogers pitched five innings, giving up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Alex Wimmers pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts.  Jim Fuller struck out four in two innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition star:  Kelby Tomlinson was 3-for-4.

The game:  Hanson singled in a run in the third.  In the fourth, New Britain scored five times to put the game out of reach early.  Koch had a two-run single in the inning and Hanson had a two-run double.  Mike Gonzales singled in a run in the ninth.  Richmond had two men on in the first, second, and fifth, but only once got a runner to third base.

Of note:  Levi Michael was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-5 with a double and a run.  Gonzales was 1-for-5 with an RBI.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-5 with a run.

FORT MYERS 7, BRADENTON 1 IN BRADENTON

Batting stars:  Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his third) and a triple, scoring twice.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his third.

Pitching stars:  Steven Gruver pitched five shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Alex Muren struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Brandon Peterson struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Jordan Steranka was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Adam Frazier was 2-for-5 with a double.  Justin Howard was 2-for-4.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put Fort Myers on the board in the first and Kepler homered in the second to make it 2-0.  In the fifth, Grimes hit a three-run homer to give the Miracle a 5-0 lead.  Kanzler hit a two-run homer in the seventh to push the margin to 7-0.  The lone Bradenton run came on Eric Wood's RBI single in the eighth.  The Marauders had loaded the bases with none out in the fourth, but a line drive double play and a strikeout ended the threat.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-5 with a run.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-4.  Dalton Hicks was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

QUAD CITIES 5, CEDAR RAPIDS 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Michael Quesada was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once.  Engelb Vielma was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Stephen Gonsalves struck out seven in five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.  Chris Mazza struck out four in two shutout innings, giving up three hits.  Brian Gilbert struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Troy Scribner struck out eight in four shutout innings of relief, allowing one hit and two walks.  James Ramsey was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Ryan Bottger was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

The game:  RBI singles by Ramsey and Bobby Boyd put Quad Cities up 2-0 in the top of the second.  Murphy doubled in a run in the bottom of the second and Vielma singled in a run in the fifth to tie it at two.  In the top of the sixth, Dayne Parker doubled in a run and Jose Fernandez had a two-run single to give the River Bandits a 5-2 lead.  The Kernels put men on second and third with one out in the seventh, but their last eight batters went out, five of them striking out.

Of note:  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run.  Alex Swim was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Murphy was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

ELIZABETHTON TWINS

GCL ORIOLES 8, GCL TWINS 7 AT ORIOLES

Batting stars:  Rainis Silva was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  Manuel Guzman was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Rafael P. Valera was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

Pitching star:  Josh Guyer pitched five innings, giving up two unearned runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Ronald Soto was 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Jemile Weeks was 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks, scoring three times.  Ademar Rifaela was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.

The game:  An RBI double by Amaurys Minier and a two-run double by Silva gave the Twins a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.  Weeks circled the bases on a triple-plus-error in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1.  The Twins led 4-2 after four and got two more in the fifth to go ahead 6-2.  In the sixth, however, two walks preceded a Ronarsy Ledesma three-run homer to cut the lead to 6-5.  Soto hit a leadoff homer in the seventh to tie it at six.  Two walks, an error, and a ground out put the Twins back up 7-6 in the top of the eighth, but in the bottom of the eighth, a walk was followed by Rifaela's two-run homer to give the Orioles their first lead of the game at 8-7.  A walk, a bunt, and a wild pitch put the tying run on third with two out in the bottom of the ninth, but a liner to left ended the game.

Of note:  Minier was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

DSL DIAMONDBACKS 5, DSL TWINS 4 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  None.

PItching stars:  Moises Gomez struck out six in 4.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and no walks.  Juan Herrera struck out two in two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Oswaldo Garcia was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Didimo Bracho was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Jose Ordaz was 3-for-4 with a run.

The game:  In the third, Roni Tapia hit a two-run double and scored on a single by Antonio Tovar to put the Twins ahead 3-0.  Emmanuel Morel doubled in a run in the fourth to make it 4-0.  It was all Diamondbacks from there.  Bracho singled in one and Gerson Hernandez singled in two to cut the lead to 4-3 after five.  In the seventh, Garcia hit a two-run double to give the Diamondbacks a 5-4 lead.  The Twins got a man to second with two out in the seventh but did not get a hit after that.

Of note:  Jorge Andrade was 0-for-5.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Tapia was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.
