Mexican Matchups: Games of October 16

Missed opportunities for Culiacan and Mexicali.  Hermosillo takes control after the second inning.

LOS MOCHIS 5, CULIACAN 2 IN LOS MOCHIS

Culiacan:  Arturo Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Gonzalo Sanudo (Houston) struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Los Mochis:  Ernesto Molinet was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Rodolfo Amador was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Tomas Solis pitched five shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Molinet doubled in three in a four-run fourth that put Los Mochis ahead 5-0.  Culiacan scored two in the seventh and had the tying run up to bat in each of the last three innings.

OBREGON 7, MEXICALI 4 IN OBREGON

Mexicali:  Walter Ibarra (Dodgers) was 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk.  Luke Montz (Oakland) was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.  Edgar Gomez (Tampa Bay) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one walk with one strikeout.

Obregon:  Carlos Valencia was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Jorge Castillo pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  A five-run third, featuring four extra-base hits, put Obregon ahead 5-1.  Mexicali closed to 7-4 and left the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth.

HERMOSILLO 8, JALISCO 3 IN JALISCO

Hermosillo:  Sebastian Elizalde (Cincinnati) was 2-for-5 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk, driving in two.  Adan Munoz was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two walks, scoring once.  Roy Corcoran (Dodgers) pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks.

Jalisco:  Gabriel Gutierrez was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jose Manuel Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a run.  Ivan Salas pitched a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

The game:  Hermosillo scored two in the third to break a 3-3 tie.  Jerry Owens singled in the go-ahead run.
