Mexican Matchups: Games of November 14

A bases-clearing double lifts Jalisco.  Solo home runs will hurt you if you don't score.  Mazatlan dies with their boots.

JALISCO 4, CULIACAN 3 IN JALISCO

TwinsEric Farris was 0-for-3 for Culiacan.

Culiacan:  Nick Buss (Arizona) was 2-for-3 with a home run, his third.  Jorge Vazquez was 2-for-4 with a run.  Marco Camarena (Mets) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on one hit and four walks with one strikeout.

Jalisco:  Japhet Amador was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.  Marquez Smith (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a home run, his seventh.  Ben Kozlowski pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The game:  A sacrifice fly put Culiacan ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth, but Amador's three-run double in the bottom of the sixth made it 4-2 Jalisco.  Culiacan got one in the seventh and put the tying run on second with one out in the eighth.

OBREGON 2, NAVOJOA 0 IN OBREGON

Navojoa:  Carlos Orrantia was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Jon Weber (Detroit) was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Eddie Gamboa (Baltimore) struck out seven in seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.

Obregon:  Said Gutierrez was 3-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  Donald Lutz (Cincinnati) was 1-for-3 with a home run (his sixth) and a walk.  Ramon Delgado (St. Louis) pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  Lutz homered in the sixth and Gutierrez homered in the seventh.  Navojoa had seven hits and four walks but could not score.

MEXICALI 4, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN LOS MOCHIS

Mexicali:  Luis Juarez was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Walter Ibarra (Arizona) was 3-for-4 with two runs.  Horacio Ramirez pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with no strikeouts.

Los Mochis:  Antonio Lamas was 2-for-3 with two walks.  Joan Carlos Pedroso was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Tomas Solis pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Juarez' RBI double in the sixth broke a 2-2 tie.  Chris Roberson homered for an insurance run in the eighth.

HERMOSILLO 6, MAZATLAN 2 IN MAZATLAN

Hermosillo:  Jerry Owens was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Jorge Flores (Toronto) was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Jesse Estrada pitched five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Mazatlan:  Olmo Rosario was 3-for-3 with two RBIs.  Gilberto Mejia was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Enrique Lechuga retired all eleven men he faced, striking out three.

The game:  Two throwing errors led to a three-run third for Hermosillo, giving them a 3-1 lead.  Mazatlan cut the lead to 3-2, but two more errors led to two Hermosillo runs in the fifth and gave Hermosillo control of the game.
