FMD: Jan 15, ’15

I added a half-dozen albums I read about on best-of-2014 lists last night.
Let's see if any show up on my Random 10.

I also removed my Christmas music. 'Bout time.

*10 - I have a lot of Oasis saved on Spotify, but it rarely comes up at random. It seems like songs I listen to a lot come up more on my random lists, even though I probably have 15,000+ songs saved. Three of the songs in the list above come from one of my other playlists. Makes me wonder if it is truly random..
    *B2 - Depressing little instrumental

    1. I really like this list...actually listened to (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in it's entirety this week after hearing Champagne Supernova in the car with my daughter and having her respond positively. Usually, she doesn't show any signs that she's actively listening to the radio if she doesn't recognize the song.

      1. Funny, that was also the first album my oldest connected with on his own. He still will break into "Cast No Shadow" on occasion, but has, for the most part, moved on to Weezer.

        1. Skim picks up her musical tastes from everywhere. I asked her to name her three favorite musical acts today, and she gave me Tool, Epica and Katy Perry.

          1. I'd guess that the venn diagram union of Tool and Katy Perry is Epica.
But then I don't know much about Katy Perry or Epica.

  2. 1. Oh Yeah -- Built To Spill -- There Is No Enemy
    2. Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time -- Gang Of Four -- Yellow EP
    3. Coalminers -- Uncle Tupelo -- March 16-20, 1992
    4. Baby, Baby, Baby -- The Jayhawks -- Smile
    5. Ashes Of American Flags -- Wilco -- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
    6. Papa Was A Rodeo -- Kelly Hogan And The Pine Valley Cosmonauts -- Beneath The Country Underdog
    7. Gasoline Ragtime -- Robert Pollard -- Normal Happiness
    8. Rocket -- Smashing Pumpkins -- Siamese Dream
    9. Genius Envy -- Teenage Fanclub -- Thirteen
    10. Mr. Whirly -- The Replacements -- Hootenanny

B1. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now -- The Smiths -- Louder Than Bombs
    B2. Jamie's Cryin' -- Van Halen -- Van Halen

    Notes
    6. Heard this song on radio once and took me years to track it down. Not sure if I heard this version or original
    8. I still love this album and this song is a highlight.
    9. 13 was much maligned when it came out, I think it's pretty strong
    10. Kids had a teacher named Mr. Werle which was homophone to this song title. I always would hum it when we visited him for teacher conferences
B2. Van Halen I -- Great rock album or greatest rock album?

The new Sleater-Kinney and Belle & Sebastain albums are streaming on NPR First Listen, probably through the weekend. The Sleater-Kinney release is awesome with already a song that may be hard to beat for best song of 2015 (Hey Darling). The B&S album is pretty decent too .

If you want to get Stevie Wonder tix in a presale. It's next Thursday at 10:00. Presale code is LOVELY

  3. * Crush - Smashing Pumpkins - Gish
    * Who Makes Your Money - Spoon - Transference
    * 4 Degrees - Tool - Undertow

    * A Little More For You - The Hives - Tyrannosaurus Hives
    * The Lengths - The Black Keys - Rubber Factory

    * Sitting on the Edge of the Bed Cryin' - The Drones - Wait Long By the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By

I've been listening to Trophy Wife - All the Sides this week. It never really settles in, but I kind of like being off-kilter throughout this one. Plus every now and then they take a minute and rock out, which I always enjoy.

    1. I liked "Sober", but hearing "4°" on headphones (during a bus trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker* during high school) sold me on buying my own copy of Undertow.
Same bus trip I also first heard Ace of Base's "All That She Wants".

*I thought it was the same trip to see Brilliant!, but the dates don't line up.
      That was a great show.

      1. WHAAAAAT? I saw Brilliant! as well. I decided to go based on a review of the exhibition in the Pioneer Press. It was a great show. The photos of Gillian Wearing in particular made a big impression. I cut this one out from the newspaper article and displayed it in my dorm room all four years of college.

        1. Actually, I was so inspired by Wearing's photos that I dragged a high school friend to the Mall of America to try to replicate them. (I was too chicken to do it on my own.) I believe it was just before Christmas, and it was the only place I could think of where we could find lots of random people to approach. We said we were doing a school project, but that was a lie. The outcome was rather disappointing--as you might imagine, Minnesotans tend to be rather reticent. I'll have to see if I still have those photos somewhere...

        2. I was listening to a lot of Trip-hop: Tricky, Massive Attack, Björk, and everything made sense for a short while.

        1. I've never really considered a "...favorite 3 song sequence." but I'm excited to dial this one up.

            1. I should look through my "Best of 201X"s and see which albums I gave some credit to for hot starts that fizzled on the b-side.

        2. Sean Paul, Dutty Rock: "Gimme the Light" - "Like Glue" - "Get Busy".
Hmmm... maybe I shouldn't do this when drunk.

    *Notes:
    5. I find this version much inferior to the version from Christian Falk's album, which has Ola Salo (from Swedish band The Ark) on background vocals throughout, just a little bass rumble underlining her vocals. (I think it's the same vocal take from her, just that Salo didn't approve his vox on her album.)
    9. One of those new albums. No opinion yet.

  7. A guy with Fred Durst on his list probably shouldn't draw attention to himself, but why, "FMD: Jan 15, '15" when it's the 16th?
