January 18, 2015: The Abyss

I splurged on a $16 beer last night, an imperial stout from Deschutes, to celebrate/lament the fact that my best friend at work is moving on. She ended up having a family come up and we didn't see her last night, but hey, that beer sure did kill.

    1. "Aggression was the main thing for me today - I just wanted to go right from the start."

      No kidding.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "When I watch him bat it reminds me that I really wasn't that good in comparison.

"And you still get some ex-players saying the game was better in the 1970s and 1980s."

Ah, ahahahahhahahahahahah hahahahha ahahahahha ahahhah a hahahah ahah aha ha ahah ah aha ahah hhhhahahah . hahah . .. ahha. hah .hah. ha.

      great stuff all around.

      1. I just watched the replay of this performance by AB de Villiers - a stunning, agressive outing. 104 runs on 31 balls.

  1. As someone hate-watching that playoff game, Lord was it fun to see the Packers lose in a soul crushing manner.

    1. I was actually glad they forced OT. I hate seeing any team lose because of an onside kick or a Hail Mary, desperate attempts by teams that have nothing left to try except hope dumb luck goes their way. Packers could have won it at the end of regulation and could have still had a chance to win it in OT if they prevent a TD in the Seahawks' first drive.

    2. That's the worst, most soul-crushing, awful loss I've ever experienced as a sports fan. I'm still nauseous. I hate sports.

I can't stand the Seahawks and the stupid "12th Man" garbage. It's even worse after they pull a horseshoe out of their ass and use the "no one believed we could win" angle. Almost every single media outlet said the Packers didn't have a chance. They outplayed them for 56 minutes and blew it. Absolutely disgusting end to the game. I just laid on the floor for an hour after it was over.

          1. I didn't really expect them to win. I figured they had a better chance than most people gave them. If they'd gotten 41-0'd I probably would've felt better today. Just a tremendous collapse.

I'm a little less sick about it today, but ugh.

  2. I just got home from my seventh curling match on four days. I am completely exhausted.

Outside of that, though, it was awesome seeing ch and mrs. Hayes at the club last night.

    1. seven years of services, but 14 years of $15 million per year, guaranteed. When will they learn?

      1. Might not be so bad. They're getting a significant savings in the near-term in exchange for paying him a bunch of money for, if they're lucky, playing for someone else. The thing that jumps out at me is the MASN deal. I don't know what the details are, but the Nationals think they're not getting what they deserve. I wonder when their TV deal expires too.

I still wouldn't do it, but only because I think I would refuse to sign a free-agent pitcher to so many years.

          1. That was just the Mets being stupid. They deferred paying him for a decade. Deferred money may still be stupid but at least the Nats aren't waiting ten years so they can owe Scherzer a few trillion.

        1. the years was my main point. Who thinks 7 years of guaranteed big money is a good idea with any starting pitcher? Other than, you know, pitchers and their agents....

  3. Anybody else heading to Twinsfest this weekend? I'm going on Saturday with Daughter the Younger and would be happy to have a beer with any attending citizens.
Also, got our tickets this weekend for the Twin Ports Brewfest at Grand Casino Hinckley (Feb. 21), with headliner Trampled by Turtles and opener Communist Daughter. That happens to be the 28th anniversary of our first date, so it's party time.
