  1. I've been up since 4:30 with my friend who's getting her tonsils out today. They just wheeled her in for surgery. I'm gonna be here until at least after Noon for recovery. Gonna be a long day. At least this place has Wi-Fi and I have my tablet.

  2. We had company this weekend for an annual get-together with some very close friends. One of the highlights of the weekend was going down to the curling club for the bonspiel and running into cheaptoy (I suspected I might see him there). We watched my friend's brother curl with his teammates to a pretty exciting victory on their last stone in their last end (they escaped the other team's hammer). It was the perfect game to introduce curling to our friends, and it was pretty cool to figure out that cheaptoy knows our friend's brother from previous bonspiels and post-game Malört consumption. I love discovering when the WGOM's circles overlap with other social circles from my life.

      1. I had math class with yickit at Drake before he started hanging out here. And Algonad went to the same high school and college as me, albeit about 12 years prior.

      2. I went to high school with Beau, does that count?
And I solicited ZG, does that count?
Rob and I went to the same church growing up. That's about the best "small world" I can do from this joint. So far.

        1. As is well known by now, Pepper and I walk on the same sidewalk downtown in opposite directions from our busses to our offices.
Who knows how many times we passed before the Will-documented meeting?

ZG's son is in my son's Cub Scout Den. I'm the Den Leader.
We also go to the same church.

          1. But only slightly less well known is this .... my little sister was a guest at AMR's wedding and I used to live a block away from his uncle in St. Paul.
I went to the SBG College of Law with DPWY (and in classes with his younger brother) before I knew him here.

All other interactions with citizenry have been cultivated as a result of this place.

      3. Hmm, let's see... I worked and went to school with a citizen's brother, another citizen and I went to the same high school (though 2 people on a Minnesota sports blog going to the same Minneapolis high school isn't too mindblowing), and besides the mutual friends, I'm relatively sure I've served CH at one the Winona establishments I've worked at. I'm sure there are some other crossovers here somewhere.

        1. Not only have you probably served me, but at that job you worked with two former string quartet colleagues/friends of mine (fraternal twin sisters).

          1. Yeah, that's whom I meant by "mutual friends". Speaking of, I bumped into "I" recently. I'm more bearded and bespectacled (and with more children in tow) than the last time she saw me, so it was fun to watch her eventually make the connection.

      4. I don't think I can say I have any connections with any of y'all.
Unless someone went to Garlough elementary in the 80's

    1. That was totally a small world moment, for sure, and your guys made some real nice shots there at the end for a well deserved victory.

    2. A good friend of mine was debate judge (or something) in something Beau did and was friends with John Wreisner (an occasional over at Spooky's other site).

    3. I ran into kalarson at a show last year? That's pretty much my only brush with y'all in real life. Sometime things will work out.

    4. If Wattsy went to 9th grade English at Brookside in A.L., he probably had NBBW's father as an English teacher.

If Dr. Fever went to A.L./Spamtown hockey games, he might have seen NBBW as a Tiger mascot.

      1. I actually spent my senior winter splitting team manager chores with a buddy for the hockey team. That was 1981. Fun team.

    5. does it count that DocS hooked me and Dr. Chop up with the best baseball tickets I'll ever have through his friend mike? Best. Seats. Evah.

  3. Has there been a nicer weekend in a Minnesota January than this past one? I mean, technically I was in Wisconsin this past weekend – but it was just beautiful. Makes me question my hatred of winter!

      1. I see another warm weekend coming and I might have to preplan some activities with the family. Watching my almost-four-year-old hike all about without asking to be carried was a big eye-opener/win as well.

    1. I'm not going to blame this weekend for something that is a product of the whole winter, but our snowshoeing outing was very nearly a bust this Sunday. On the plus side, I snowshoed across a rapidly melting creek and a neighboring pond without falling through or sinking in past my ankles.

  4. Today is Daughter the Younger's birthday, so I'm taking her to Twinsfest on Saturday. If any citizens plan to be there I'd be happy to have a beer with them. And speaking of beer, we got our tickets this weekend for the Twin Ports Brewfest at Grand Casino Hinckley on Feb. 21, which is the 28th anniversary of our first date. Headliner at the event is Trampled by Turtles, opening act is Communist Daughter. Looking forward to it.

  5. As lots of you are aware, my sister Anna passed away in June from Cystic Fibrosis. This year, Anna's family and friends are getting together our biggest Climb for the Cure team ever, and doing what we can to support CF research. February 28th, we'll be climbing to the top of the IDS tower, getting ourselves plenty out of breath in the process, just like a CF patient.

I could say lots about the CF Foundation, but basically, they're the model for research foundations, giving more money to research than just about all others. Huge strides have been made in CF treatment and towards a cure, including some of the first gene therapy-potential genetic cure developments just within the past year. There's a long ways to go, but there is so much reason for optimism. That all said, I'm going to throw a link up here to the fundraiser. First, if anyone wants to climb with us, that would be awesome. Feel free to sign up and join our team. If you do, I'll be happy to buy you a drink after the climb. And if you can't climb, if you'd consider donating, that would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks all.
    Here's the page.

      1. Why does 'twitterjacking' sound like something completely different from what it actually is?

  6. Andrew Wiggins is a bust. Or not.

Also, I'm highly amused that this guy felt it necessary to predict shooting percentages to three digits.
