MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE

CULIACAN 11, JALISCO 8 IN JALISCO

Culiacan:  Joey Meneses (Atlanta) was 4-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Dave Sappelt was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Anthony Vasquez pitched five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Jalisco:  Jose Manuel Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double, driving in four.  Japhet Amador was 1-for-4 with a three-run homer.  Ivan Zavala struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing two hits.

The game:  Three singles, two errors, and a sacrifice fly produced three Culiacan runs in the fourth, putting the team ahead 5-2.  In the fifth, a two-run homer by Sappelt and a two-run double by Rico Noel highlighted a six-run inning to give Culiacan a commanding 11-2 lead.  Jalisco fought back, scoring three in the sixth, one in the seventh, and two in the ninth, but did not get the tying run even to the on-deck circle.

Series status;  Culiacan takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

DOMINICAN WINTER LEAGUE

CIBAO 5, ORIENTE 1 IN ORIENTE

Cibao:  Leury Garcia (White Sox) was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Alexi Casilla was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Parker Frazier pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Oriente:  Junior Lake (Cubs) was 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk.  Edgar Garcia (Arizona) pitched a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and a walk.

The game:  Casilla's RBI single put Cibao up 2-0 in the third.  It was 3-1 through five and stayed there through eight, but a two-run Cibao ninth put the game out of reach.

Series status:  Cibao takes a 3-2 lead in the best-of-nine series.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

SANTURCE 3, MAYAGUEZ 2 IN SANTURCE (14 INNINGS)

Mayaguez:  Ozzie Martinez (Baltimore) was 1-for-4 with two walks.  Reiner Roibal pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Fernando Cabrera retired all eight men he faced, four by strikeout.

Santurce:  Ruben Sosa (Houston) was 1-for-4 with a home run and two walks.  Robert Andino was 2-for-4 with two walks and an RBI.  Joel Piniero pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Mayaguez got single runs in the second and third to go up 2-0, but Santurce countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie it at two.  There were very few threats until the fourteenth.  Santurce got a pair of one-out singles to put men on first and third and a stolen base made it second and third.  A two-out intentional walk loaded the bases, and an accidental walk to Andino forced in the winning run.

Series status:  The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1.
