Minor Details: Games of April 9

Brock Peterson and Josmil Pinto carry the Red Wings.  Walks lead to a late-inning loss for the Lookouts.  The Miracle gets blanked.  Mat missed a lot of Batts for the Kernels.

ROCHESTER 6, BUFFALO 3, IN BUFFALO

Batting stars:  Brock Peterson was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Aaron Hicks was 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks, scoring three times.  Josmil Pinto was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.

Pitching stars:  A. J. Achter pitched two shutout innings, giving up no hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Logan Darnell pitched a shutout inning, allowing a hit and a walk, Michael Tonkin struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition star:  Ryan Tepera struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks.

The game:  Peterson's two-run homer in the fourth put Rochester up 3-1.  It was 4-3 Red Wings after six and stayed there until the ninth, when Pinto's two-run double put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Eddie Rosario was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Alex Meyer pitched five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and six walks with three strikeouts.

MONTGOMERY 4, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN MONTGOMERY

Batting stars:  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-4 with a home run and a walk.  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Tyler Duffey struck out ten in 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Boog Powell was 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.  Thomas Coyle was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Bradin Hagens struck out nine in 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks.

The game:  RBI singles by Polanco and Hicks put the Lookouts ahead 2-0 after five.  It was 3-0 going to the bottom of the ninth, when Nick Burdi came in.  He walked the first two men, gave up a single, struck out the next two, but then walked two more, making the score 3-2.  Cole Johnson then came in and gave up a two-run single to Powell to win the game for the Biscuits.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.

CHARLOTTE 2, FORT MYERS 0 IN CHARLOTTE

Batting star:  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Kohl Stewart pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts.  Luke Westphal pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.  Madison Boer pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Blake Snell struck out ten in six shutout innings of relief, allowing three hits.  Drew Smyly, on a rehab assignment, started and pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.

The game:  The Stone Crabs scored both their runs on the fifth, the first on an RBI single by Braxton Lee and the second on a run-scoring double by Keon Wong.  The closest the Miracle came to scoring was the ninth.  They led off the inning with a pair of singles, but lost a runner on the bases.  They got another single with two out to put the tying run on, but that was it.

Of note:  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-4.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.  Engelb Vielma was 1-for-3.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, KANE COUNTY 2 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Jonatan Hinojosa was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Trey Vavra was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts struck out seven in 5.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and two walks.  Jared Wilson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition star:  Colin Bray was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

The game:  It was scoreless until the sixth, when an RBI single by Hinojosa, a sacrifice fly, and a run-scoring single by Brian Navarreto gave the Kernels a 3-0 lead.  It was 4-1 going to the ninth, when Gordon delivered a two-run single-plus-error and Zack Larson drove in a run with a single.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-5 with a run.  Zack Larson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Max Murphy was 0-for-5.

  1. Duffey's 10K, 1 BB game was his best since a 10K, 1BB game for Ft. Myers in 2013. He did that in 7 innings. Those are his only two 10K games. His career K/9 rate his 7.3.
