Game Log: Minnesota Wild @ St. Louis Blues, GAME 1

How about some history?

  • The Minnesota Wild are 1-7 in games 1 of playoff series in franchise history (they've lost 7 in a row).
  • The Minnesota Wild are 8-18 in road playoff games in franchise history (they've lost 11 of their last 12).
  • The Minnesota Wild have never beat the St. Louis Blues in a playoff game in franchise history.
  • The Minnesota Wild are 7-18 in playoff games on days where the Twins won a baseball game (they are 11-11 if the Twins don't win or don't play)

OK, enough history.

I don't know what I think about this series, to be honest with you.  The Wild are certainly capable of beating the Blues, but I would say that it wouldn't take much for the Blues to beat the Wild as well.

Looking around I see a lot of people saying this series is too close to call and then picking the Blues.  The Wild have the advantage in goaltending and the penalty kill, but their power play just doesn't contribute and I can see that being a potential huge problem if the Blues find a way to get their own special teams rolling.

Still, if the goal totals stay low, I like the Wild's chances.

Either way, it's playoff hockey and therefore awesome.  Here we go!

  1. Also, boo home market blackouts of the national televised game. I dislike FSN's announcers.

  2. Wow, I actually got something to work on the NBC live app. of course, the west coast start time means I won't be able to watch much of it.

          1. I could live with it if it were a Friday or Saturday night, but it's stupid as hell mid week.

    1. I don't think there is a price low enough....

I am drinking one of these tonight. Very quaffable and refreshing.

      1. I had a few of those on a date night at the longHorn steak house while back. Very nice beer, that.

      2. No argument from me that yours is a better option, but I paid about $0.11 an ounce and don't hate it that much.

        1. If you're as broke as I've been at times over the past 3 years, one learns how to drink cheap. Can't, for the price, beat Walgreen's in-store brand of Big Flats. Never paid more than $4 for a sixer, and it's "not bad" if you're pretty skint.

            1. This is what you're looking for if you're up for an adventure. It also comes in light, but even I won't stoop to that (again).

      3. bS - I also have my cream stout homebrew, but I've been drinking it almost exclusively for the past 10 days and just needed something else.

The cream turned out pretty good, but doesn't go down nearly as well in 70 degree weather.

          1. No, but compounded with the consumption of said brew at the near complete exclusion of others deadens the pallet at bit.

    2. I slum it from time to time, myself. Usually in the form of a dirty thirty of Regal Brau. I found some end of season leinies big butt for 8.99 for a 12-pack yesterday, though.

Also grabbed this to balance things out.

        1. To be fair, it rated 91 to style. Ratebeer is a little odd that way, but I recently read some things about the BA bros that have led me to avoid their site altogether.

This was the first beer I've had from Pearl Street, but I really liked it. only had one do far, though, so not enough sample size to describe it.

          1. I meant no disrespect, I just wanted to know what it meant (don't think I've been to Ratebeer before). The only time I go to BA at all is to post or read links for this site.

            1. Regal Brau is not good beer, so there was no offense taken.

Ratebeer is pretty solid. The second reading beers get based on their style is a really great feature since, for example, something like a pilsner is going to get a low score because it isn't loaded with hops or barrel aging. It's a much more context fair score.

    3. I didnt know this until a month ago: Coors is only brewed in Colorado where Coors Light is brewed where ever they want to brew it. Something about the water from the Rockie Mountains can only make Coors a Coors.

        1. I worked at a liquor store over the winter and the sales rep for MillerCoors (whatever they are called) told me that. He was a pretty cool dude actually because he was a straight shooter. He wouldnt bash on Budweiser products just because they are the competition. He would say if one of his products are not great, but you know customers buy it so he sells it to the store.

          1. You've shown significantly better ability to admit a mistake than Flip is capable of.

  3. I have my tablet's sound bluetooth'd to my 2.1 computer speakers. Not an insane sound system by any stretch, but the spaced out speakers give a pretty big upgrade over my tablet built-ins.

  4. This is the part of the game where the Blues know the are being outclassed so they just try to get the Wild players in the penalty box.

  5. I like his chances, but I'd really like to see more production out of Pomminville... he runs so hot and cold (and he's been cold for a while - 2 goals & 5 assists in the past month).

  6. So will Hitchcock pull the goalie about two minutes into this period like Roy did last year? I don't know if my heart can handle that.

  7. I believe the color commentator just said that to get over their previous playoff failures, the Blues just need to "get through those first two rounds".

    Hard to argue with that.

      1. I was our intramural floor hockey goalie in college. It was a blast.

But of course, that was frat boys with a plastic ball. Not beasts of men with hard rubber pucks.

  8. The fourth line just bought a nice 30 seconds on what should be their last shift.

  9. Difference between British soccer announcers and boring hockey announcers with bad hairpieces. After the cross-check, Lapanta said Granland "smirked" while every British soccer announcer would have described it as "a wry smile" which is such a better phrase.

    1. He'd just failed to clear like 8 seconds before that ... but yeah, nice work there at the end.

  10. I felt like the Wild were the better team for most of that game (minus a few stretches in the third period).

Good game. Great result. Can't wait for Saturday.

  11. I agree with Hitchcock. I've seen the Blues look much scarier than they did tonight.
