April 18, 2015: Well, Duh

The management in my store started noticing that the head of my department, who was inexplicably given the spot two months ago, absolutely sucks at his job. They're the last to know. It's sad, in its way.

  1. The 14 y.o. got a concussion playing softball on Wednesday of last week. My wife and the other kids are out of town for a wedding this weekend. Sitting with a kid that can't watch tv or read or think is about as boring as it gets.

    1. One of my colleagues had to work from home most of the week because her son got a concussion playing soccer. Dark rooms, only 3 hours of activity, etc. Sorry to hear about your young 'un, hoping for a fast, complete recovery.

    2. My brother got concussed pretty badly in high school. He was repeating himself every five minutes, not remembering he'd already told me he got to play center at football practice. No anything for like a week. No contact for almost a month.

      1. Luckily, hers appears to be fairly minor. Still has a headache but dizziness is gone.

        Follow up apptmt on Wednesday.

    1. Ah! A friend of ours mentioned that a few months ago. I soooo want to be a part of that someday. Maybe we can get a WGOM contingent.

  2. I stayed up too late and overslept and now I missed Record Store Day since I have to head to work.

  3. Cedar Rapids pitcher John Curtiss has been placed on the disabled list due to a concussion suffered during Thursday's game.

  4. Trey had a big two-out three-run home run to spark a comeback from an 8-2 deficit as the Newmark Diamondbacks went on to an 11-9 win over the Twins on Saturday. It was 8-4 when he homered to make it 8-7. When he scored, it was the fifth run of the inning, which is the max. We held them to 1 run in the top of the third and scored four in the bottom of the third. The Twins then went 1-2-3 in the fourth to end the game. Trey also singled in the first inning and scored a run. What was really nice about the win is I gave a kid a chance to be the starting pitcher for the first time. In our league, only first place goes on to the Tournament of Champions and no one is going to catch the Nationals, so we're focusing on getting better and having fun, so I let kids play positions they hadn't had a chance to play before.

    1. Good for you.

My dad always had the rule that everyone gets a chance to play any position they want in the season at least once except pitcher and catcher. And he'd put them in the field at least 3 innings even though the minimum was 2. Despite allowing the bad kids to play more, we won often and had fun

      1. Yeah, at this level there are so few plays in the field the only positions that matter that much are pitcher and catcher. The good hitters generally hit line drives and the not so good wait around for walks or chase pitches out of the zone for strikeouts. Throwing strikes is super important and then when there are base runners, a good catcher will prevent a lot of runs. I think the strand rate for base runners is only 25% (excluding runners on base when the fifth run of an inning happens) at best because of so many wild pitches, etc., that moves runners around. I start the best fielders at their best positions because we're facing the best hitters in the first inning and then move them around after that. I've told them they have to be at practice if they want to play a new position though. I also won't put kids in the infield that I'm afraid won't pay attention and could get hurt.
