Minor Details: Games of April 20

The Chattanooga bullpen wastes a fine game by Alex Wimmers.  Nick Gordon and Zach Granite lead Cedar Rapids.  One-run games have not been kind to Twins affiliates recently.

ROCHESTER AT SYRACUSE

Postponed:  inclement weather.  Game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

MISSISSIPPI 6, CHATTANOOGA 5 IN MISSISSIPPI

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.  Dalton Hicks was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk, driving in one.  Stuart Turner was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Alex Wimmers pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks with three strikeouts.  Cole Johnson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Mallex Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in two.  Ryan Weber retired all eight men he faced, striking out four.

The game:  A single, four walks, and Travis Harrison's two-run single put Chattanooga up 4-0 in the third.  It was 5-0 through seven, but in the eighth Smith's two-run double was the highlight of a four-tun inning that cut the lead to 5-4.  In the ninth, David Rohm tripled in the tying run and scored on a squeeze bunt to win the game for Mississippi.

Of note:  Byron Buxton was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Miguel Sano was 0-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4.

PALM BEACH 4, FORT MYERS 3 IN PALM BEACH (10 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Aderlin Mejia was 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Tim Shibuya struck out three in three perfect innings.  Madison Boer struck out two in 2.2 innings, giving up one run on a hit and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Mason Katz was 1-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  C. J. McElroy was 2-for-4 with two runs.  Jimmy Reed pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  The Miracle opened the third with four consecutive hits, leading to three runs and a 3-0 lead.  It stayed 3-0 until the fifth, when three singles and Katz' three-run double tied the score.  There was no more scoring, and not even much of a threat of a score, until the bottom of the tenth.  A hit batsman, a stolen base, and a walk put men on first and second with two out for the Cardinals and Luke Voit singled home the winning run.

Of note:  Jason Kanzler was 0-for-5.  Marcus Knecht was 0-for-5.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Alex Swim was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Luke Westphal pitched four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Jake Yacinich was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs.  Andrew Daniel was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

The game:  A sacrifice fly produced a run in the third, an error brought one home in the fourth, and Gordon had an RBI single in the fifth to put the Kernels up 3-0.  The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but Granite had an RBI triple in the seventh and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to put the game out of reach.

  1. I'm starting to get excited about Zach Granite. In the past I just liked him for his name, but this year it's starting to look like maybe he can play.

      1. crap. for some reason, I thought he was a pitcher. Well, he can still be a heavy hitter in the lineup.
