Game 20 Recap: Twins 3, Tigers 2

I saw none of the game, only heard about an inning of it, and don't have much time, so this will be less than the recappiest recap ever.  Sorry about that, especially when we finally beat the Tigers for once.

It looks like the story of the game is Mike Pelfrey, who pitched really well for the second straight time.  Seven innings, seven strikeouts, two runs, only one earned run, three hits and two walks.  I don't know that this cancels out all the bad pitching we've seen him do, but it does at least give hope that maybe the improvement is real.  After all, the Tigers lineup is not exactly a bunch of stumblebums, and Pelfrey held them down pretty darn well.  I'm still not sure I want him in the rotation rather than Milone or May, but he'll almost certainly be there, so we'll hope that the addition of a new pitch, plus more time away from surgery, is enough so that he's now an actually decent pitcher.

Kennys Vargas was held out of the lineup again.  Press reports I've seen indicate that Molitor is not down on him, that he's still considered an important part of the future and they're still working with him, but that Molitor felt he simply needed a little time to work on some things without the pressure of being in the lineup every day.  I'm not sure that the right approach, in that I'm not sure you improve by not playing, but at least it sounds like it's being done with a purpose, rather than just sitting him because he's slumping.  I'm willing to give Molitor the benefit of the doubt on it at this point.

Danny Santana got three hits.  Over the last three games he's 6-for-10 and raised his average from .203 to .261, which is what you can do in April.  He's drawn zero walks this season and has only three extra-base hits (all doubles), but at least he's showing signs of life.  The Twins could certainly stand for their leadoff batter to continue hitting, especially when their number two batter is batting only .203 at this point.

So we finally took a game from the Tigers.  We go for the series victory today, as Phil Hughes looks for his first win.  Shane Greene goes for the Tigers.  Hughes had easily his best game of the season last time out, even though he lost, and Greene had easily his worst game of the season last time out.  May both of those trends continue.  We're still on track for 151-11!
