    1. I like the aggressiveness on the base paths (especially if that was a hit & run that just didn't quite click), almost as much as I like Hughes missing bats.

[edit] Hughes with 14 K & 1 ball on his first 15 pitches!

      1. That looked high enough that I don't think Joe normally swings at it, so I'm gonna go with hit and run. May as well do that with the guy with the best bat control.

  1. Finishing the job you needed to do by 9:30, allowing you to go back to the hotel and watch baseball is pretty great.

      1. Oh, my bad. I thought the Detroit guys said "first time for everything" after the play and just assumed.

  2. Day game and I'm home for the day. Last time this happened, the results were not so good.

      1. The Detroit guy just said "That's the farthest ball I've seen hit to RF here." My immediate thought was "You don't remember this one then, do you bud?"

          1. That is probably my favorite player reaction ever - the 'O' face obviously, but also the way he brings up his hands a little, unsure of whether to cheer or cover his mouth or what.

            Thome's is also pretty good.

            1. I've always assumed he's also a little startled by the sound of a cannon going off about 10 feet from him.

      1. PLOUFFE! is a magical, mysterious creature who does not respond to my particular voodoo.

  3. first time through the order - Hughes allowed just one hit, a single.
second time through the order - he gave up five doubles, and a single.

        1. Not sure what that represents, but I'm thinking I should lay off this line of thinking.

              1. I remember where I was when I heard Mauer was drafted first. Dad, Boog, and I were driving up to the Metrodome for a day game. We were on 35 entering the southern end of the Metro area. Somewhere along there there's a big Postal Service facility on the East side of the interstate. That's when I heard it on the radio.

                1. Hmm, Wikipedia says the draft was held on June 5-6th that year (Monday and Tuesday). The Twins were indeed home that weekend, but it was against the Pirates. I don't think I ever saw the Pirates at the Metrodome, nor do I think I wouldn't have heard about it straight away. My memory must be faulty, or jumbling together a few different experiences.

    1. Ball hit over Schafer's head off the wall in CF, bounced out towards Arcia in right, which is not...ideal.

      1. It came off the wall, struck Schafer as he was closing and deflected along the base of the wall & warning track in RCF ... not sure where Arcia was playing it.

    2. Schafer was going back on the ball and jumped at the wall and missed it, it rolled around for a bit in the R/C alley.

  4. And then Arcia was lucky that short hop ended up in his glove instead of scooting under it.

  5. Nunez pinch-running for Vargas. I wonder if Molitor will contrive to have someone else play first or if Mauer will and lose the DH.

    1. I wonder if you could find four current Twins with anywhere close to these stats.
I wonder if you could find four former Twins with anywhere close to these stats.

of course not, because the Twins don't bat against Twins pitching...

        1. Thome - Career at Target Field

          Year Games HR’s Batting Average
          2010 55 15 .292
          2011 41 7 .213
          2012 5 2 .333
          Total 101 24 .279

Not all (or even mostly) against Twins pitching, but yeah, JI JIM THOME did alright here.

              1. I just copy/pasted from BR, but yes that's not right. I'll double check I got the right field.

    1. Gameday indicates that Fien is the third Twins player injured today after Schafer and Hughes ... what happened to Hughes!?

      1. I must not have been paying much attention because he finished the 5th, but didn't come back in so I figured he was just pulled.

        1. He only threw 70 pitches... perhaps injured could explain the 5 doubles he gave up after scorching through the lineup the first time.

      2. Well, he's not on my fantasy team, so he should be ok.
(From the guy who lost two starters for the season on the same night. Screwed.)
