Minor Details: Games of May 4

D. J. Baxendale and Byron Buxton lead the Lookouts to victory.  Zach Granite provided the only Miracle offense, and it wasn't enough.  Lots more offense in a Kernels win.

CHATTANOOGA 2, JACKSONVILLE 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting star:  Byron Buxton was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his third.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched six shutout innings, giving up three hits and five walks with five strikeouts.  D. J. Johnson pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  Zack Jones struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  David Adams was 1-for-2 with two walks.  Sharif Othman was 2-for-4.  Kendry Flores pitched eight shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

The game:  The Suns put a man into scoring position in five of the nine innings, but never got him past second base.  The Lookouts got a leadoff single from Miguel Sano in the second, but did not get another hit through the first eight innings.  In the ninth, Carlos Paulino led off with a walk.  Following a bunt, Buxton delivered a walkoff two-run homer.

Of note:  Dalton Hicks was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-3.  Max Kepler was 0-for-3.

BRADENTON 3, FORT MYERS 0 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star:  Zach Granite was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Luke Westphal pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Alex Muren struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

Opposition stars:  Jose Osuna was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  Edwin Espinal was 2-for-2 with two walks.  Matt Benedict pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless until the fifth, when a walk and two singles put the Marauders on the board 1-0.  A walk and Osuna's two-run homer made it 3-0 in the eighth.  The Miracle got a man to second in the first inning but did not do so again until the ninth, when a runner reached third base.  Both times it was Granite, who singled and stole second in the first and singled and reached third on a single in the ninth.

Of note:  Alex Swim was 1-for-4.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 9, WISCONSIN 3 IN WISCONSIN

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  T. J. White was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, driving in one.  Trey Vavra was 1-for-2 with three walks, scoring twice and driving in one.

Pitching star:  Zach Tillery struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition star:  Carlos Leal was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  Murphy's two-run single in the third made it 3-0 Kernels, but the Timber Rattlers scored one in the third and two in the fourth to tie it at three.  A Jorge Fernandez RBI triple was the big hit in a three-run fifth that put the Kernels up 6-3.  They added a run in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.  Jared Wilson struck out seven in six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.
