Minor Details: Games of May 24

Tommy Milone finally gives up a run for Rochester.  Miguel Sano hits his ninth homer for Chattanooga.  Aaron Slegers has an awesome game for Fort Myers.  Extra-base hits key a big third inning for Cedar Rapids.  The Twins sweep!

ROCHESTER 3, NORFOLK 1 IN NORFOLK

Batting stars:  Jose Martinez was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and two RBIs.  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-3 with a home run, his seventh.

Pitching star:  Tommy Milone struck out eight in 8.1 innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  Christian Walker was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Nolan Reimold was 2-for-4.  Jorge Rondon struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing a walk.

The game:  Martinez homered in the third and a run scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to put the Red Wings up 2-0.  Ortiz homered in the seventh to make it 3-0.  The Tides got two singles in the second and again in the fourth but did not score until the ninth, when Walker ended a string of eleven consecutive men being retired with a home run.  It was the first run Milone has given up since going to Rochester, a string of 31.2 scoreless innings.

Of note:  Argenis Diaz was 1-for-4.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-4.  Josmil Pinto was 0-for-4 with a run.  James Beresford was 0-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 7, MOBILE 6 IN MOBILE (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Jorge Polanco was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Miguel Sano was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his ninth.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Zack Jones pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two walks.

Opposition stars:  Sean Jamieson was 1-for-3 with a home run and two walks.  Mitch Haniger was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Ronnie Freeman was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

The game:  Sano hit a two-run homer as part of a four-run first.  Harrison's RBI triple in the second gave the Lookouts a 6-1 lead.  The Bay Bears scored two in the sixth, but that still left the Lookouts with a 6-3 lead which they held until the ninth.  Then, however, a walk, a hit batsman, an RBI double, two more walks, and a sacrifice fly tied the score and sent the game to extra innings.  In the tenth, Byron Buxton delivered a one-out run-scoring single-plus-error to give the Lookouts a 7-6 lead and the Bay Bears went down in order in the bottom of the tenth.

Of note:  Buxton was 1-for-4 with a walk.  Max Kepler was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Greg Peavey pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 4, BREVARD COUNTY 0 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Marcus Knecht was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Pitching star:  Aaron Slegers struck out nine in a complete-game shutout, giving up three hits and no walks.

Opposition stars:  None.

The game:  Knecht singled in a run in the second and a Swim single drove home two in the third to give the Miracle a 3-0 lead.  The Manatees got a man to third base in the first inning and had two on in the second, but did not threaten after that.  An error allowed the Miracle to tack on an insurance run in the eighth.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with a run.  Bryan Haar was 1-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 11, BELOIT 1 IN BELOIT

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 3-for-5 with a triple, scoring three times and driving in one.  Zack Larson was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times and driving in one.  Tyler Kuresa was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.

Pitching stars:  Zach Tillery pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits.  Luke Bard pitched two perfect innings.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Trent Gilbert was 2-for-4.  Jerad Grundy pitched three shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  A pair of wild pitches helped the Kernels score twice in the second.  In the third, Murphy and Tanner English tripled and Larson and Pat Kelly doubled in a six-run inning that put the game out of reach early.  The Snappers scored their lone run in the fifth on three walks and an error.

Of note:  English was 1-for-5 with a triple and a walk, driving in two.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-5.  Trey Vavra was 1-for-5 with two runs.
