Minor Details: Games of May 31

Weather was the big winner.  A rare bad game for Aaron Slegers.  Sam Gibbons makes his Cedar Rapids debut in a Kernel win.

ST. LUCIE 10, FORT MYERS 4 IN ST. LUCIE

Batting stars:  Bryan Haar was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Luke Westphal pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Matt Summers pitched a perfect inning.  Dallas Gallant pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Matt Oberste was 4-for-5 with two doubles, scoring three times and driving in two.  Dominic Smith was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in four.  Amed Rosario was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.

The game:  The Mets jumped on the Miracle early.  Smith had a two-run single in a four-run first.  Rosario had a two-run triple in a four-run second.  Smith doubled in two more in the third.  It was 10-1 at that point and the Miracle never got back into the game.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 0-for-3.  Alex Swim was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Chad Christensen was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Aaron Slegers, who had been pitching well, pitched only three innings, giving up ten runs (eight earned) on twelve hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, CLINTON 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  T. J. White was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Fernandez was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.

Pitching stars:  Michael Theofanopoulos struck out three in three shutout innings, giving up two walks.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a hit.

Opposition stars:  Rayder Ascanio was 2-for-3 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Arby Fields was 2-for-5 with a walk and an RBI.  Zack Littell pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Nelson Ward tripled in two in a three-run fifth and Fields had an RBI single in a two-run sixth that put the LumberKings up 5-0.  The Kernels then started their comeback.  White had a two-run triple in a three-run sixth, and in the eighth an error and two singles tied the score 5-5.  In the eleventh, a single, a bunt, and a two-out single by Tanner English led to a Kernel victory.

Of note:  English was 1-for-6 with an RBI.  Zack Larson was 1-for-4 with two runs.  Sam Gibbons, in his Class A debut, struck out six in five innings, giving up three runs (all in the fifth) on six hits and a walk.
