Minor Details: Games of June 23

Greg Peavey makes his AAA debut in a Red Wings loss.  Kohl Stewart pitches very well in a Miracle win.  Austin Diemer starts the Appalachian League season with a bang--actually, with two of them.  Several Twins pitchers have good games in a GCL win.  The DSL Twins lose in a very DSL-like way.

PAWTUCKET 5, ROCHESTER 3 IN PAWTUCKET

Batting stars:  Eric Fryer was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Wilkin Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Cole Johnson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jackie Bradley, Jr. was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Deven Marrero was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Keith Couch pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  Marrero singled in a run in the sixth to put the Red Sox up 3-1.  In the seventh, however, singles by Fryer and Oswaldo Arcia and a Ramirez double tied the score at 3-3.  It wasn't tied for long, though.  In the bottom of the seventh, a single and two walks loaded the bases and Carlos Peguero delivered a two-run single to put the Red Sox back in front 5-3.  Doug Bernier doubled to lead off the eighth but the last six Red Wings were retired.

Of note:  Danny Santana was 0-for-4.  James Beresford was 0-for-4.  Danny Ortiz was 0-for-4 with a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4.  Greg Peavey, making his AAA debut, pitched 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The game:  The Blue Jays scored once in the first, but homers by Kuresa and Diemer in the second put the Twins up 2-1.  Diemer's two-run homer in the fourth made it 4-1.  A three-run sixth, helped by three walks and a hit batsman, made the score 7-2 and it was not close again after that.

    1. I don't know, but my guess is that Peavey's start in AAA may be a one-off: the Red Wings were short a pitcher, Chattanooga's in the all-star break, Peavey was going on natural rest, and so he got the call. I haven't actually seen that, though. You're right, if this is an actual call-up of Peavey over Berrios, it makes no sense. Which isn't to say that the Twins wouldn't do it.

      1. It also might be that the Twins wanted Berrios to be able to play in the Southern League All-star game. I don't know how big a deal players consider minor league all-star games, but if it's a one-off, it seems possible that it could've factored in. If it's an actual call-up of Peavey over Berrios, though, it still makes no sense.
