  1. No, but they did call up Aaron Hicks. He was having the best minor league season he's ever had (granted, it's only 132 at-bats). Dare we hope that he's figuring things out? I know the "He's only ___" thing is a joke around here, but he is only twenty-five, and so is still young enough to be improving.

      1. He did take a pitch that looked to be on the inside part of the plate and hit it to right field, which is the way they should all do it. Try to get a hit, but if you don't, hit to the right side.

        1. Whether that's the way they should all do it kind of depends. If, given the type of pitch, speed, and location, his best chance to get a hit was to go the other way, then yes, that's what they should do. If, however, his sole thought was "advance the runner by hitting the ball to the right side", then I think reasonable minds can differ. It could be argued that, with a slugger like Sano at the plate in the second inning, his goal should be to look for a pitch he can drive and, as Tom Brunansky says, replace the runner on second.

          1. I should have clarified that it should be attempted before 2 strikes, then after that, you should just look to put the ball in play. For lefties it shouldn't be all that hard to pull the ball even when it's on the outside part of the plate and for righties, they can do like Sano did, which is "inside-out" the ball to hit it to the right side, which is basically how Mauer has swung his entire career. If Sano truly has as much power as they say, it won't matter which direction he hits it.

  2. Americana concert in Simsbury tonight, out on the grass. Nice. Me likes me summat JPSousa. And fireworks!

    1. It's like the button in Asteroids where you 'git me out of here' but can land anywhere.

  3. this just in: Panzanella is awesome. And super easy to make, particularly when you have a mess of ripe, garden tomatoes and some leftover baguette.

    I started with this recipe.

I had a mess of cherry tomatoes, half a loaf of baguette, an orange bell pepper, a couple of kirby cukes (too bitter as it turned out, even after salting and draining; leftovers from making pickles today), about a 1/4 lb of mozzarella, some mushrooms, and some flat-leaf parsley. Schmooshed a big clove of garlic with salt, chopped the tomatoes and pepper, cubed the bread, mixed everything together with some good olive oil and some red wine vinegar, salt-n-pepper. Let stand for about 30 minutes, mixing occasionally, to let the bread soften. Scoop into chilled salad bowls. I added chopped kalamata olives; she added some balsamic (oy!). Num num.

  4. Ok, dumb question: why the hell didn't they walk Dyson to set up the double play sitch?
