Minor Details: Games of July 10

The Red Wings split a doubleheader for the only Twins win.  The Twins got shutout in three of the games, with the Miracle wasting a fine performance by Mat Batts.  Oswaldo Arcia hit another home run.  And we're caught up!

SYRACUSE 4, ROCHESTER 0 IN SYRACUSE (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Batting star:  Eric Farris was 1-for-2 with a double.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Trea Turner was 2-for-3 with a triple, scoring once and driving in two.  Ex-Twin Darin Mastroianni was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  A. J. Cole pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  Turner had a two-run triple and later came around to score in a three-run third for the Chiefs that made it 3-0.  The Chiefs added a run in the fourth.  The Red Wings put men on first and second in the first and got a leadoff double from Farris in the sixth, but did not get a man past second in either inning.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-3.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-2 with a walk.  Taylor Rogers pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up four runs on ten hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

ROCHESTER 11, SYRACUSE 2 IN SYRACUSE (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Oswaldo Arcia was 2-for-2 with a home run (his eighth), a double, and two walks, scoring three times and driving in three.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a grand slam (his eighth homer) and five RBIs.  James Beresford was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs.

Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger struck out three in 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Cole Johnson pitched a scoreless innings, walking one and striking out one.

Opposition stars:  Trea Turner was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.  Jason Martinson was 1-for-4 with a home run, his fourteenth.  Rick Hague was 2-for-3.

The game:  The Red Wings led 2-0 after one, but back-to-back homers by Turner and Martinson tied it 2-2 in the third.  Argenis Diaz singled in a run in the fourth to put the Twins up 3-2.  Arcia hit a two-run homer in a three-run fifth and in the sixth, following four walks, Rodriguez hit a grand slam to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Chris Herrmann was 1-for-3 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Logan Darnell pitched 3.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

MISSISSIPPI 9, CHATTANOOGA 0 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Marcus Knecht made his AA debut, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Shannon Wilkerson made his Twins debut, going 1-for-3 with a walk.  Levi Michael was 1-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  Alex Muren pitched two shutout innings, giving up two walks with one strikeout.  D. J. Johnson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up two walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Kevin Ahrens was 3-for-6 with a two-run homer (his fourth) and a double.  Levi Hyams was 2-for-3 with a home run and two walks, driving in two.  Andrew Barbosa struck out twelve in seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk.

The game:  The Braves scored one in the first and got a homer from Hyams in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.  They added two in the seventh and got five in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Ahrens hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, which also featured five walks and two wild pitches.

Of note:  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4.  Brett Lee pitched four innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and no walks with no strikeouts.

CLEARWATER 3, FORT MYERS 0 IN FORT MYERS

Batting star:  Tanner Vavra was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts struck out ten in seven shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks.  Matt Summers pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Derek Campbell was 3-for-4.  Chace Numata was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  David Whitehead pitched eight shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

The game:  It was scoreless through seven, with each team only once getting a man as far as third base.  In the eighth, a single, a double, and a hit batsman loaded the bases for the Threshers.  A walk brought home one, a ground out brought home another, and a sacrifice fly brought home a third to make it 3-0.  The Twins got only a single after that.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4.  Alex Swim was 0-for-4.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-3 with a walk.

KANE COUNTY 8, CEDAR RAPIDS 3 IN KANE COUNTY

Batting stars:  Max Murphy was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Tanner English was 2-for-3 with a run.  Rafael P. Valera was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Colin Bray was 2-for-3 with two triples and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Chuck Taylor was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Ethan Elias pitched six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The game:  It looked good early.  Murphy singled in a run in the first, Valera brought one home on a single-plus-error in the fifth, and an error brought one home in the sixth to give the Kernels a 3-1 lead.  It went downhill from there, though.  The Cougars scored four in the sixth, aided by two walks, two wild pitches, and an error to take a 5-3 lead.  They added two in the seventh and one in the eighth.  The Kernels got only one hit after the sixth and that man was immediately erased on a double play.

Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Zack Larson was 0-for-3.  Zach Tillery pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

KINGSPORT 3, ELIZABETHTON 2 IN KINGSPORT

Batting stars:  Tyler Kuresa was 3-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Manuel Guzman was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-3 with a home run, his second.

Pitching star:  Nate Gercken pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with three strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Kevin Kaczmarski was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Patrick Mazeika was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Audry German pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

The game:  Hengelbert Rojas singled in a run in the second and Luis Ortega did the same in the third to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.  The Twins got one back in the fourth on Wade's homer.  It stayed 2-1 until the eighth, when Kaczmarski delivered an RBI single to make it 3-1.  Kuresa hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth, but the Twins did not get the tying run on base.

Of note:  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-3.  Samuel Clay pitched 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

GCL RED SOX 5, GCL TWINS 1 AT RED SOX

Batting stars:  Jermaine Palacios was 2-for-4 with a double.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Williams Ramirez struck out seven in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and three walks.  Rich Condeelis pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a walk with one strikeout.  Max Cordy struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and two walks.

Opposition stars:  Yoan Aybar was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jagger Rusconi was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Gerson Bautista struck out six in five innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.

The game:  Bryant Hayman singled in a run in the first to give the Twins a 1-0 lead.  It held up until the sixth, when the Red Sox scored all five of their runs.  They got only two hits in the inning, both singles, but were aided by two hit batsmen, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch.  The Twins got a runner into scoring position in the eighth and again in the ninth but never threatened to get back into the game.

Of note:  Trey Cabbage was 0-for-4.  Hayman was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-3 with a walk.

DSL ROJOS 9, DSL TWINS 4 AT ROJOS

Batting stars:  Gorge Munoz was 4-for-4 with two runs.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Daniel Jimenez was 4-for-5 with two homers (his third and fourth) and a triple, scoring four times and driving in five.  Edgar Herrera was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.  Anthony Rubicando was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

The game:  The Rojos scored once in the first, twice in the third, and twice in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.  The Twins got two in the sixth, but the Rojos got a two-run homer in a four-run bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 2-for-4.  Junior Amarante was 0-for-4.  Jadison Jimenez pitched five innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
