      1. And here's the previous best photo of Pluto by Hubble. Looks like the orientation might be the same too.

  1. Uhh, I think, regardless of the AL's home or away status that combination of events would seem somewhat unlikely.

      1. Also done. Thanks for the reminder.

I liked this way of doing it - my votes felt much more knowledgeable. I don't think I spent less time, but I felt better about my votes.

        1. Yeah. I was able to save some maybes for people I didn't look at that hard previously.
I feel like I had more "No" votes this time*.

  2. Stupid microwaves.
We've got an over-the-range one, bought last... August or September?
Over-range lightbulb burns out. Both go out, which seems odd, but that's not the issue (maybe it's a series circuit).
Bulb 1 has that thing where the glass detaches from the metal base. Needlenose pliers... spark. Crap, the light was still "on". Microwave's display lights go out.
Down to house's circuit-box, off then on. Microwave does not respond.

Looking at the schematics, I see one fuse ($12) that's going to be so hard to replace, and Dey's doesn't have it in stock. I can't be sure that's it, either. It looks like that fuse might be a thermal fuse, or a fuse solely for the "noise filter" (or both).
If the surge burnt the main board, those cost more than a new microwave. 12-month warranty doesn't include wiener husband stupidity.

And I was feeling so good about myself, as yesterday I fixed two batons (hot glue), a sandal (shoe goo), and three fishing rods (detangling, restringing).

    1. If Dey's doesn't have the part in stock, I might cut my losses and get a new microwave before going down that rabbit hole.

      1. That's what I'm thinking. I'll do that (same model so I don't have to drill new holes through the tile backsplash etc).
Then, with the old microwave no longer in such a place, I'll investigate whether the fuse is blown. If it is, I'll replace it and sell or donate the old microwave (with installation hardware!).

Gosh I do hate removing and replacing over-the-range microwaves.

Speaking of give-away appliances, anyone looking for a dehumidifier? We had one for the old house when we were fixing it up (before we added central A/C). It's basically new and Goodwill says they don't accept them.
If you can pick it up, you can have it. If you can't pick it up, maybe we could make arrangements.

Also: an old toddler car seat, maybe for a second car that doesn't regularly transport the kids. It's been used for all four kids, so it's too old for laws, but in good shape and it hasn't been in any accidents.
I'm of the mind that old (but not too-old*) carseats are still valuable for some situations. Maybe a grandparent that might occasionally transports a kid, but swapping out seats is too laborious for it to work.

*CER just turned 12 and I think we got this when she was 1, so 11 years.

        1. I've never done an over-the-range microwave, but I don't imagine it's fun.

I have a couple of old car seats as well, if someone misses out on AMR's.

    2. Our over the range is probably thirty years old, but it's getting removed and replaced tonight.

    1. Earlier this year I did the "poop in the box" deal. Nice thing is you get to poop in a box (duh). Bummer is that you have to poop in a box once a year for 10 straight years.

      1. If nothing else will encourage you to think outside the box, this certainly will.

    2. Atta boy, Stick.

Wife had hers a couple weeks ago. Apparently, her equipment is "tightly packed." Doc told me it took much longer than normal to negotiate the twists and turns. Wife woke up during the procedure and was VERY sore after. Bad show by the anaesthesiologist.

But she's good for a decade now.

  3. So, last night we went to Texas Roadhouse with the whole family. (Best ribs EVAR!) I got my normal full slab of ribs, my wife got the filet with a sidekick of ribs, son got chicken fingers with steak fries, etc. Of course we order way more than we could eat, so we pack it up in take home containers. We throw in some of the bread and cinnamon butter to boot. As we're driving home, my wife starts to open one of the containers (the restaurant is 45 minutes away from home) and grabs a steak fry, and dips it in the butter for the bread. I watched this and chuckled...

      1. We actually got in at around 7:15 with no wait. First time that's ever happened.

    1. #8 is the same company albeit different location from where we ate on Friday. Next St. Paul lunch may have to try for #2 as it's only two blocks away.

Edit: Aw, they're only open at nights. So much for that.

    2. In my short time here, I've had Parlour, Nook, and Red Cow on that list. I was really impressed with Parlour, but I didn't think Nook or Red Cow were anything special (my friend had a fit when my mind wasn't blown by Nook). Be'wiched has a burger on their dinner menu that I really liked. Parlour, Be'wiched, and Freehouse all use brisket (and I think sirloin) in the meat mixture. Very juicy.

    1. Depends on what you call significant, there are a lot of stones left unturned. This is the sentiment that Alan Stern was hoping to avoid. Some day we'll be exploring the Oort Belt, even.

    2. The thing I kind of love is that, in Star Trek terms, what we've done is "send out a probe." Basically, it's this incredibly complex thing, but we can imagine a future in which it's fairly routine. The more we do it, the better we get at it, the more basic it can seem. I love thinking about it that way.

    3. My favorite sentence of that article:

Scientists have many questions about Pluto, which was still considered the solar system's ninth planet when New Horizons was launched in 2006.
