Minor Details: Games of July 15

The Lookouts have one handed to them.  The Miracle wastes fine pitching by Chih-Wei Hu.  Rafael P. Valera leads the Kernels to victory.  LaMonte Wade stays hot in an E-Twins win.  The DSL Twins get one hit in a seven-run tenth that propels them to victory.

CHATTANOOGA 6, BILOXI 5 IN BILOXI (11 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fourth) and two runs.  Marcus Knecht was 1-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Stephen Wickens was 1-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Jake Reed pitched two shutout innings, giving up one hit.  D. J. Johnson pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits.  J. T. Chargois pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Nick Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a home run, his thirteenth.  Michael Reed was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a walk.  Orlando Arcia was 2-for-5 with a home run, his fifth.

The game:  Homers by Josh Fellhauer and Ramirez gave the Shuckers a 3-0 lead in the first, but the Lookouts came back with a three-run third, aided by two errors, to tie it 3-3.  Each team scored once in the seventh and again in the eighth, making the score 5-5.  In the eleventh, a walk, a single, and a passed ball gave the Lookouts a 6-5 lead.  The Shuckers went down in order in the bottom of the eleventh.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Travis Harrison was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-3.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-4 with an RBI.  Alex Wimmers pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

BREVARD COUNTY 3, FORT MYERS 1 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting stars:  Alex Swim was 3-for-4 with a double.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-3 with a run.

Pitching stars:  Chih-Wei Hu pitched six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts.  Zach Jones pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Omar Garcia was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Jose Pena was 2-for-3 with a double and a run.  Cy Sneed pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with six strikeouts.

The game:  Each team scored once in the third for a 1-1 score.  The Miracle put men on second and third with none out in the fourth, but failed to break the tie.  The Manatees put men on second and third in the seventh, but similarly failed to score.  In the eighth, though, Garcia tripled and scored on a Christopher McFarland single to break the tie.  Garrett Cooper added an RBI single later in the inning.  The Miracle got one man on in the ninth, but no more.

Of note:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with an RBI.  Mitch Garver was 0-for-4.

CEDAR RAPIDS 5, BURLINGTON 2 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Rafael P. Valera was 4-for-4 with three RBIs.  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Felix Jorge pitched six innings, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger retired all five men he faced, striking out three of them.  Yorman Landa struck out three in a scoreless inning, giving up a walk.

Opposition stars:  Trever Allen was 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks.  Steven Mateo was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Austin Robichaux pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks with one strikeout.

The game:  Valera had an RBI single in the first to give the Kernels an early 1-0 lead, but Allen tied it with a home run in the fourth and the Bees got another run in the fifth to give them a 2-1 advantage.  In the seventh, though, RBI singles by Gordon and Corcino put the Kernels back in front and a two-run single by Valera made it 5-2.  The Kernels were aided by two errors, a walk, and two wild pitches in the inning.  The Bees loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but their last five batters were retired.

Of note:  Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a run.  Max Murphy was 1-for-3 with a walk.

ELIZABETHTON 4, DANVILLE 3 IN DANVILLE

Batting stars:  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-2 with a double and two walks, driving in three.  Kamran Young was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring once.  Manuel Guzman was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs.

Pitching stars:  C. K. Irby pitched 1.2 perfect innings with one strikeout.  Tyler Stirewalt pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks with one strikeout.  Kuo Hua Lo pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Jose Morel was 3-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Luke Dykstra was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Kurt Hoekstra was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

The game:  The teams matched one-run innings, making the score 3-3 through five.  It stayed 3-3 until the ninth, when Guzman walked and scored on Wade's double.  The Braves got one man on in the ninth but he was immediately erased by a double play that ended the game.

Of note:  Amaurys Minier was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Alexis Tapia pitched five innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

GCL RAYS AT GCL TWINS

DSL TWINS 11, DSL MARINERS1 4 AT MARINERS1 (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Gorge Munoz was 1-for-4 with a home run (his second) and two walks, scoring twice and driving in two.  Junior Amarante was 1-for-3 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with three walks and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  Jadison Jimenez pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.  Fredderi Soto pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a walk with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Anthony Jimenez was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.  Ismerling Mota was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Oberto Munoz was 1-for-3 with a double and a run.

The game:  For nine innings, the Mariners1 would get ahead by one run and the Twins would tie it up.  It was tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4, with the Mariners1 going up by one and losing the lead each time.  Finally, in the tenth, the Twins blew the game open with seven runs.  They scored all seven runs before anyone was out, and got only one hit, a single.  The inning went walk, error, two wild pitches, three walks, wild pitch, two walks, single, and two more walks.  That's eight walks, three wild pitches, one error, and one single for the inning.  DSL Baseball!

Of note:  Edwin Franco was 1-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Jean Carlos Arias was 1-for-4 with two walks, scoring once and driving in one.  Francisco Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Huascar Ynoa struck out three in three innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and no walks.
