Minor Details: Games of July 18

Jose Berrios pitches very well to no avail.  A big day for Kennys Vargas.  Chris Herrmann has met his match in Michael Ratterree.  Tanner English gets the key hit for the Kernels.  Two six-run innings for Elizabethton.  The GCL Twins can't come back.

LEHIGH VALLEY 4, ROCHESTER 2 IN ROCHESTER

Batting starsDanny Ortiz was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer (his tenth) and a walk.  Eric Farris was 2-for-3.  Doug Bernier was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching starsJose Berrios struck out nine in seven innings, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk.  Caleb Theilbar struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Aaron Altherr was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  Jordan Danks was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Sean O'Sullivan pitched six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  The IronPigs scored single runs in the second and third, but Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie it 2-2.  It stayed 2-2 until the eighth, when Altherr hit a two-run homer to put the IronPigs back in the lead 4-2.  The Red Wings drew three two-out walks in the bottom of the eighth to load the bases, but did not get a hit the rest of the game.

Of noteJorge Polanco was 0-for-5.  James Beresford was 1-for-5 with a double.  Chris Herrmann was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run.  Oswaldo Arcia was 1-for-4.

CHATTANOOGA 5, BILOXI 3 IN BILOXI

Batting starsKennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his second and third) and three runs.  Max Kepler was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Aderlin Mejia was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Pitching starsJason Wheeler struck out ten in 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and one walk.  Jake Reed pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up no hits and no walks with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Nathan Orf was 3-for-4 with a run.  Michael Reed was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  Tyrone Taylor was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

The gameKepler doubled in a run in the first, but Reed doubled in two in the third to give the Shuckers a 2-1 lead.  The Lookouts got two in the fourth to go into the lead for good.  Vargas homered in the sixth and again in the ninth to provide some insurance runs.  The Shuckers got the tying run on base with one out but could only score once in the ninth.

BREVARD COUNTY 7, FORT MYERS 6 IN BREVARD COUNTY

Batting starsZach Granite was 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.  Chad Christensen was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

Pitching starKohl Stewart pitched six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Opposition stars:  Taylor Brennan was 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring twice and driving in two.  Michael Ratterree was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in two.  Mark Williams struck out seven in four shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks.

The gameWalker had a two-run single as part of a four-run first inning for the Miracle.  Each team scored once in the second and again in the fourth to make the score 6-2.  It was 6-3 through seven, but the Manatees scored twice in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5.  In the ninth, the first two Manatees were retired, but two singles and a walk loaded the bases and two hit batsmen brought in the tying and winning runs.

Of noteMitch Garver was 0-for-4 with a run.  Brett Doe was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

CEDAR RAPIDS 3, QUAD CITIES 2 IN QUAD CITIES

Batting starsTyler Kuresa was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks, scoring once.  Brian Navaretto was 2-for-3 with two runs.  Edgar Corcino was 2-for-5 with a walk.

Pitching starsSam Gibbons pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Michael Theofanopoulos pitched a perfect inning.  Trevor Hildenberger pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Ramon Laureano was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Trent Woodward was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Justin Ferrell pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

The gameNick Gordon had an RBI triple in the third, but the River Bandits got two in the sixth to go ahead 2-1.  It stayed 2-1 until the ninth, when Tanner English delivered a two-run single to put the Kernels up 3-2.  The River Bandits got a two-out single in the ninth but no more.

Of noteEnglish was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.  Gordon was 1-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.  Zack Larson was 0-for-3.

ELIZABETHTON 15, BURLINGTON 10 IN BURLINGTON

Batting starsAlex Perez was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk, scoring once and driving in three.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer (his third) and a walk, scoring twice.  Kamran Young was 2-for-6 with a three-run homer and three runs.

Pitching starsC. K. Irby struck out two in 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.  Kuo Hua Lo pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Xavier Fernandez was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring three times and driving in three.  Jose Martinez was 2-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Brandon Dulin was 1-for-3 with a triple and two walks, scoring twice.

The game:  In the second Perez had a three-run double and Young had a three-run homer to give the Twins a 6-0 lead.  That seemed safe, but Fernandez' three-run double was part of a four-run fourth that cut the lead to 8-5.  In the sixth, Austin Bailey had a two-run single as part of another four-run inning that put the Royals in front 10-9.  In the ninth, however, the Twins put together their second six-run inning of the game.  Austin Diemer had a two-run double in the inning and Wade hit a three-run homer.

Of noteManuel Guzman was 0-for-4 with two walks and two runs.  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-6 with a run.  Samuel Clay pitched 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on two hits and three walks with one strikeout.

GCL RED SOX 7, GCL TWINS 2 AT RED SOX

Batting starsJermaine Palacios was 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-4.

Pitching starMiguel Gonzalez struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Yomar Valentin was 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one.  Yoan Aybar was 2-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Jerry Downs was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  The Red Sox scored three in the first to go ahead 3-0.  The Twins got single runs in the third and fourth, but the Red Sox got one back in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.  It stayed there until the eighth, when the Red Sox scored three times to put the game out of reach.  The Twins got only one hit in the fifth through eighth innings.

Of noteLuis Martinez was 0-for-3 with a run.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-4.  Trey Cabbage was 0-for-4.  Jose Martinez pitched five innings, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
