Minor Details: Games of July 23

Another fine outing by Jose Berrios.  D. J. Baxendale pitched even better but was not rewarded for it.  A four-run seventh carries the Miracle.  The Kernels win a close one.  A ninth-inning rally wins it for the E-Twins.  No offense for the GCL Twins.  The DSL Twins take a high-scoring game.

ROCHESTER 4, GWINNETT 0 IN ROCHESTER

Batting stars:  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Danny Ortiz was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his eleventh.  James Beresford was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Pitching stars:  Jose Berrios pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and two walks with one strikeout.  A. J. Achter pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Eric Young, Jr. was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Vin Mazzaro pitched two shutout innings, allowing three hits.

The game:  Rodriguez doubled in a run in the first and Beresford singled one home in the third to give the Red Wings a 2-0 lead.  Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 4-0.  The Braves got their first two men on in the fourth, but the only time they moved a man past second was in the eighth, when they loaded the bases with two out.

Of note:  Jorge Polanco was 0-for-4.  Oswaldo Arcia was 0-for-4 with a run.

TENNESSEE 4, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

Batting stars:  Levi Michael was 2-for-5 with a double and run.  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Travis Harrison was 2-for-4 with a double.

Pitching stars:  D. J. Baxendale pitched seven innings, giving up one run on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  D. J. Johnson struck out two in a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Billy McKinney was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Willson Contreras was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Rob Zastryzny struck out five in five innings, allowing one run on seven hits and no walks.

The game:  Each team scored once in the first and that's all the scoring there was for seven innings.  In the eighth, however, the Smokies struck for three runs to take a 4-1 lead.  The Lookouts got a pair of one-out singles in the ninth, bringing the tying run up to bat, but the next two batters were retired.

Of note:  Kennys Vargas was 0-for-4.  Adam Brett Walker II was 1-for-3 with a walk.

FORT MYERS 7, TAMPA 4 IN TAMPA

Batting stars:  Mitch Garver was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.  Jason Kanzler was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, his seventh.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Pitching star:  Nick Burdi struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Kyle Higashioka was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.  Michael O'Neil was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Tyler Wade was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The game:  Wade singled in a run in the third and O'Neil did the same in the fourth to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  The Miracle came back with three in the fifth, including RBI singles by Logan Wade and Walker, to take a 3-2 advantage.  The Yankees tied it 3-3 in the sixth, but the Miracle struck for four in the seventh to go in the lead for good.  Garver drove in two with a single and Kanzler had a two-run homer.  The Yankees got one in the bottom of the ninth but did not bring the tying run up to bat.

Of note:  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-5 with a run.  Brett Doe was 0-for-4 with a walk.  Mat Batts struck out six in 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.

CEDAR RAPIDS 6, WISCONSIN 5 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Batting stars:  Nick Gordon was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring twice and driving in one.  Zack Larson was 1-for-3 with a triple, scoring twice and driving in one.  Tanner English was 1-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and two runs.

Pitching stars:  Michael Theofanopoulos struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks.  Jared Wilson struck out two in two shutout innings, giving up one hit.

Opposition stars:  Luis Aviles was 3-for-4 with a double and a run.  Alan Sharkey was 2-for-5 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Gregory Munoz was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.

The game:  Greg McCall had a two-run double in the first, but the Kernels came back in the third, getting three runs to take a 3-2 lead.  The Timber Rattlers got three in the fourth to go back up 5-3, but again the Kernels came back, getting a home run by English and an RBI single by Rafael P. Valera to tie the score 5-5.  A walk, a double, an intentional walk, and a hit batsman plated the go-ahead run in the seventh.  The Timber Rattlers managed only one single after that.

Of note:  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-5 with a triple.  Sean Miller was 0-for-4.  Zach Tillery pitched 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and no walks with one strikeout.

ELIZABETHTON 2, PRINCETON 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Amaurys Minier was 1-for-1 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Ariel Montesino was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Daniel Kihle was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching stars:  Andro Cutura pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Onesimo Hernandez pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Brett Sullivan was 2-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double.  David Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Ian Gibaut struck out seven in 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  It was scoreless through seven.  Sullivan hit a home run with one out in the top of the eighth to make it 1-0 Rays.  It looked like that might be enough.  The first two Twins batters in the ninth went out.  Then came a walk and a pinch-hit RBI double by Minier to tie it 1-1.  Montesino then singled to bring home the winning run.

Of note:  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 with a double.  Chris Paul was 0-for-3.

GCL ORIOLES 1, GCL TWINS 0 AT ORIOLES

Batting star:  D. J. Hicks was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.

Pitching stars:  Williams Ramirez struck out seven in 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks.  Max Cordy struck out two in a scoreless inning.  Stephen Pryor struck out four in 1.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk.

Opposition stars:  Ryan Mountcastle was 1-for-3 with a run.  Michael Costello pitched four shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk with no strikeouts.

The game:  The Twins put a man on second in the second and third but did not get a hit after that.  The game's lone run came in the seventh on a single, a throwing error, and an RBI single by Ronald Soto.

Of note:  Luis Arraez was 0-for-4.  Lewin Diaz was 0-for-4.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4.

DSL TWINS 10, DSL METS1 6 AT TWINS

Batting stars:  Jhonathan Alvarez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice.  Edwin Franco was 1-for-4 with a double, scoring three times and driving in one.  Edgar Herrera was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

Pitching star:  Randolph Perez struck out six in three shutout innings, giving up two hits.

Opposition stars:  Hanser Ortiz was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run.  Anthony Dirocie was 2-for-4 with two triples, scoring once and driving in one.  Jorge Cespedes pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The game:  The Twins scored single runs in the first and second, but the Mets1 scored single runs in the third and fourth to tie it at 2-2.  Herrera then had a two-run single in a five-run fifth that gave the Twins a seemingly comfortable 7-2 lead.  The Mets1 came back, though, getting one in the fifth and scoring three in the sixth, and inning highlighted by Claudio Geraldo's two-run double, cutting the lead to 7-6.  In the eighth the Twins scored three more to put the game out of reach.

Of note:  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Acosta was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Francisco Hernandez was 0-for-2.  Miguel De Jesus struck out eight in four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.
