Minor Details: Games of July 29

We once again begin the road to getting caught up.  The Red Wings fall behind early.  Poor games by D. J. Baxendale and Felix Jorge.  Mat Batts and Andro Cutura continue to pitch well.  Not much offense for the DSL Twins.

TOLEDO 9, ROCHESTER 3 IN TOLEDO

Batting stars:  Danny Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a home run, his twelfth.  Doug Bernier was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, driving in one.  Nate Hanson was 2-for-4.

Pitching stars:  Mark Hamburger pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.  Caleb Thielbar struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up a hit with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Marc Krauss was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring three times and driving in two.  Mike Hessman was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (his fifteenth), a double, and a walk.  Tyler Collins was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, scoring once.

The game:  Argenis Diaz singled in a run in the top of the first, but the Mud Hens dominated the game from there.  They took the lead with two in the first and Hessman hit a two-run homer in the third to make it 4-1.  Bernier singled in a run in the fourth to make it 4-2, but the Mud Hens had another two-run inning in the fifth to go ahead 6-2 and the Red Wings did not get back into the game.

Of note:  Xavier Avery was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  James Beresford was 0-for-3 with two walks.  Reynaldo Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with a double.  Michael Bowden struck out four in four innings but gave up four runs on six hits and a walk.

PENSACOLA 10, CHATTANOOGA 9 IN CHATTANOOGA (10 INNINGS)

Batting stars:  Max Kepler was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fourth), a double, and a walk, driving in three.  Stuart Turner was 1-for-3 with a double and three walks, scoring three times.  Heiker Meneses was 3-for-5 with a double and a walk, scoring twice.

Pitching star:  Matt Summers pitched three perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Juan Perez was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Beau Amaral was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring once and driving in three.  Juan Duran was 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one.

The game:  The Blue Wahoos scored twice in the first and twice more in the third to go up 4-0.  The Lookouts fought back but still trailed 5-4 after seven.  In the eighth, however, a two-run homer by Kepler and a two-run single by Aderlin Mejia put the Lookouts ahead 8-5.  The lead was short-lived, though, a two-run double by Marquez Smith capped a three-run inning that left the score tied 8-8.  Amaral's two-run double in the tenth gave the Blue Wahoos a 10-8 lead.  The Lookouts scored once in the bottom of the tenth and put the tying run on second with two out, but a ground out ended the game.

Of note:  Shannon Wilkerson was 3-for-7 with an RBI.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-5 with a walk and a run.  Adam Brett Walker II was 0-for-6.  D. J. Baxendale pitched five innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

FORT MYERS 6, LAKELAND 0 IN FORT MYERS

Batting stars:  Zach Granite was 1-for-4 with a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in two.  Marcus Knecht was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.

Pitching stars:  Mat Batts pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Zach Jones pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.  Corey Williams pitched a perfect inning.

Opposition stars:  Jared Reaves was 1-for-3 with a triple.  Raph Rhymes was 0-for-2 with two walks.  Adenson Verastegui struck out two in two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

The game:  MItch Garver singled in a run in the first.  In the fourth, Granite's two-run triple was key to a four-run inning that put the Miracle in control of the game.  The Flying Tigers put a man on third in the first and third innings but did not threaten after that.  At one point, seventeen consecutive Flying Tigers were retired.

Of note:  Garver was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

CLINTON 11, CEDAR RAPIDS 4 IN CLINTON

Batting stars:  Zack Larson was 2-for-4 with a double, scoring once and driving in one.  Tyler Kuresa was 1-for-3 with a walk, scoring once and driving in one.  Brian Navaretto was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Pitching stars:  None.

Opposition stars:  Arby Fields was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks, scoring once and driving in three.  Austin Coucino was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double, scoring three times.  Gianfranco Wawoe was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBis.

The game:  The Kernels scored once in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4, but it was all LumberKings after that.  Fields hit a two-run double in the sixth to make it 7-4, Chris Mariscal homered in the seventh to make it 8-4, and Wawoe's two-run double capped a three-run eighth to make it 11-4.

Of note:  Tanner English was 0-for-3 with a run.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4.  Edgar Corcino was 0-for-4.  Felix Jorge struck out seven in 5.1 innings but gave up seven runs (six earned) on eleven hits and two walks.

ELIZABETHTON 4, JOHNSON CITY 1 IN ELIZABETHTON

Batting stars:  Daniel Kihle was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, his fourth.  A. J. Murray was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Pitching stars:  Andro Cutura pitched seven innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Kuo Hua Lo struck out three in two perfect innings.

Opposition stars:  Chris Chinea was 1-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Allen Staton was 2-for-4 with a double.  Ramon Santos pitched six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The game:  Kihle singled in a run in the second and doubled in a run in the fourth to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.  Chinea led off the seventh with a home run to cut the lead to 2-1, but Wade's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh made it 4-1.  The last nine Cardinal batters were retired.

Of note:  Chris Paul was 3-for-5.  Travis Blankenhorn was 1-for-4 with a double.

GCL TWINS AT GCL RAYS

Rained out.

DSL DODGERS 6, DSL TWINS 2 AT DODGERS

Batting stars:  Antonio Tovar was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.  Darling Cuesto was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.

Pitching star:  Erick Balbuena pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.

Opposition stars:  Keibert Ruiz was 3-for-4 with a triple, scoring once and driving in one.  Jimy Perez was 1-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and a walk, scoring twice.  Johan Diaz struck out eight in 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks.

The game:  The Dodgers scored two in the second, then got one in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh to take a 6-0 lead.  The Twins got single runs in the eighth and ninth but did not threaten to get back into the game.

Of note:  Emmanuel Morel was 0-for-4 with a walk and a run.  Jorge Acosta was 1-for-4.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-3 with a walk.  Miguel De Jesus pitched three innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout.
