Game 119 Recap: Yankees 8, Twins 4

Inevitable.

Here's the thing:  I never, ever expect the Twins to beat the Yankees.  Ever.  It doesn't matter what the matchups are.  It doesn't matter what the score is.  It doesn't matter what inning it is.  I never, ever expect the Twins to beat the Yankees.  Ever.

I understand this may not be the most logical, rational feeling for me to have.  I'm fairly sure that, in the fifty-five years the Twins have been in existence, they have beaten the Yankees once or twice, even if no example of that comes readily to mind.  For all I know, they may have a better record against the Yankees than they have against some other teams.  But I'm not talking about logic.  I'm talking about the way I feel.  And the way I feel is that I never, ever expect the Twins to beat the Yankees.  Ever.

I made a comment in the game log about how we have eleventy billion relief pitchers and yet we used J. R. Graham to face Alex Rodriguez with the bases loaded.  That was just emotion talking.  The fact is it that it didn't matter that it was J. R. Graham.  Alex Rodriguez was going to hit a home run there no matter who pitched.  And if he hadn't, the next batter would have.  And if the Yankees hadn't taken the lead that inning, they would have in the eighth, or in the ninth.  I never, ever expect the Twins to beat the Yankees.  Ever.

So, given that, am I going to close by predicting a season-ending winning streak for the Twins?  Yes, I am.  Because I believe in the law of averages.  Having lost roughly 3, 246 consecutive games to the Yankees, the law of averages says the Twins are due to win today.  We have Ervin Santana going, who you could say is our ace if you don't really care what you say, against Nathan Eovaldi, whose chief claim to fame is that he's the only major league player in history whose last name starts with "Eo".  Never mind that he shut the Twins down when he faced them a few weeks ago.  Never mind that Santana hasn't had a good game in almost a month.  We're due.  We're overdue.  Today we start our season-ending forty-three game winning streak!  We'll just have to settle for 102-60!

  1. This game was lost Monday when Molitor used Fien, Jepsen and Perkins for the third straight game in a tie game. I understand wanting to go for the win, but it may just extend a game that we end up losing anyways and then we don't have them available for a more winnable game the next day. Once Pelfrey was pulled in the sixth, there was no way we were going to win this game because those three pitchers weren't available and May wasn't going to be used before the ninth.

  2. I actually got to listen to this game as FW was working late. Of course, once she got home things took a turn. She is a Yankees fan through her father. I blame her entirely.
