    1. I'm sure he was busy sending his kids off for the first day of school and bringing Zee Little Woman breakfast in bed for her birthday. Right?

        1. Never met 'em - they didn't claim the seats. Based on the number of folks milling about the beer tents & smoking sections, I'm not surprised. Actually, there were about 8 vacant seats in our row.

          How about yours?

          😉

  1. Miss SBG started third grade today. Some of you may remember when I was single, studying for the bar, etc. Mags, you feeling old yet?

Miss SBG is 4' 91/2" tall. An informal view of her class this morning had her the tallest in the class by a couple of inches. Based on the growth charts I've seen and other predictive models I've looked at, I believe she will be about 6' when she's done growing.

    1. It sure goes quickly. Kernel started Pre-Kindergarten (preschool) at daycare today - 1 year until she begins Kindergarten. Received an email this morning from my wife asking me to start scheduling school visits to figure out if we want to open enroll her somewhere other than our "assigned" school.

I have no idea how tall she'll be.

        1. I've looked at that and others that take into account her parents' height. Based on our height and her age, she projects to 5'11", plus or minus two inches. But, my wife's a lot shorter than her sister and both of her parents were tall, so I'm guessing that 6' is a very good possibility.

      1. Miss SBG is just so tall relative to her peers that I'm interested as to her projected height. She skates with girls that are 2 and 3 years older than her and she's taller than all of them.

    2. GRZ is starting kindergarten today and is around 4 ft. I'm mostly curious with her, since my wife grew really early but stopped in like 6th grade, whereas I was quite short for my young life but didn't stop growing until I was 21 (and am now 6' 3" or so).

      1. Aquinas started Kindergarten today. He's averageish height, maybe a little taller. That puts him dramatically above where I was when I was a year or more older than him.

    3. The jalapeño had a visit day today for kindergarten, and tomorrow is the real thing. As excited as I am for him, my experience of his schooling so far is pretty much death by paperwork. Right now I'm signing on to a parent portal. The school kindly mailed me the activation code . . . which is 32 characters long.

      1. Regarding technology available to parents, someone at work showed me that they could log in to their account and see all of their daughter's real time results in each of their classes (down to the assignment). I'm sooooooo happy that shit didn't exist in my day.

        1. Speaking of parenting, the Mrs ranted a bit about the decline of same. She estimated that more than half of the kids in her 3s class (first day today) came in pull-ups. At a pre-school that "requires" kids to be potty-trained to attend.

She also changed two kids who crapped their pants.

Ten years ago, she says, all the kids were fully potty-trained on day one. She blames the growth of precious snowflake-ism.

She also related a story told to her recently by their CPR trainer, about a call he'd been on. Guy was first-responder treating a toddler with a SERIOUS infection. told mommy that kid needed an emergency injection of antibiotics before transport to an emergency room. Mommy didn't want the injection because precious was scared and didn't want the shot. Umm, lady, precious might die before he gets to the hospital!

Almost enough for me to turn in my hippie librul card.

          1. As someone who's kid wasn't potty trained until she was 3.5, I'd be hesitant to condemn many of those parents. (I'm also thinking that, no offense to Mrs. S, perhaps she's remembering the kids ten years ago being "potty trained" but maybe shutting out rampant pants wetting.) She also occasionally craps her pants, but she's had difficulty pooping her whole life so she's a bit terrified when she needs to go and holds it until that just isn't possible anymore no matter how much we tell her she needs to get to the bathroom. Although, apparently she has no problems going at school. In other words, it is imosssible to logic with 3-4 year olds.

            1. I was at least 4 until I was trained. I was similar to your daughter. There's actually a DSM diagnosis for what I had, but basically I was terrified. Of course sitting at a 90 degree angle is an unnatural way for humans to poop; add constipation and fear and things don't go well

            2. From the Repository:

Until the mid-1900s, the vast majority of babies finished toilet training by 2 years, and achieved nighttime dryness by 3 years. Since then, the age for toilet training has increased dramatically. The convenience of disposable diapers, pull-up diapers and more efficient laundry facilities may contribute to this trend.

In 1957, the average age of starting toilet training was still under the age of one year old, 11 months, and 90% of children were dry during the day by 2 years.

In 2002, the average age that parents recognized their child "showing an interest in using the potty" was 24–25 months, and daytime dryness was achieved on average at almost 3 years of age. Now nighttime accidents are considered normal until 5 or 6 years of age.

Mrs. S might be off on "ten years ago" but she is right about the trend.

              1. No, that ten year figure is direct observation of her pre-schooler kids. But good pull on more general evidence.

            3. to be fair to her, she was ranting about the parents she deals with. She loves the kids. Doesn't love changing poopy pants, but loves the kids.

And yea, I would not want to condemn any kid for not being potty trained by 3. Every kid is different. It's just, as Sean documents, the world has changed a lot just during her career as a preschool teacher.

And let's not forget that we are in California, the land of fruits and nuts. Hence the additional story about the life-saving injection that the mother objected to in the heat of the moment.

          1. I think this was supposed to nest under Beau's comment that "sitting at a 90 degree angle is an unnatural way for humans to poop."

              1. After living in Senegal . . . no wait!

I was weirded out by the Big Brother nature of the school's parent portal. I guess I think it's more important that parents and children communicate face to face about how classes are going. I mean, does access to all that info actually improve student achievement whatsoever?

  2. One other thing about the first day of school: we moved Miss SBG to a new school this year because they offer a program that fits her abilities better than her old school (plus free as opposed to paying tuition on top of taxes). She was quite apprehensive about being the new girl. Early report from her teacher: she's doing fine. Her section is 25 kids: 17 girls. The boys will be seriously outnumbered.

      1. What is not dead, though is Berardino's reporting. He's the premier Twins beat writer in the Twin Cities, not afraid to say anything that needs to be said.

    1. The gist of the opening - He died at 62 from complications of diabetes. He died at a hospital in San Domingo and his body was flown back to his native San Pedro de Macorís in the east of the country for a burial on Wednesday.

The rest seems to be a recap of his career.

  3. The Twins' 2016 schedule is out. They open April 4 in Baltimore, which it seems like they do a lot. Then they go to Kansas City before coming back to Target Field for their hope opener against the White Sox April 11.

    1. It was first reported by a guy living in his mom's basement, so there's that, but now the mainstream press is running with it. Gardy did hire an agent back in April, and he was offered a position in the Twins organization last year that he turned down. I'd say this is a solid rumor.

    2. I saw speculation that since Dombrowski was out, there was a good chance his replacement will want to hire his own manager, and Gardy's name was one of those that had been floating out there. It wouldn't surprise me. I don't know how I'd feel about that.
