Cup of Coffee, 22 October 2015: Slimy

I was recently friended on Facebook by a law school classmate. He just published a book. I thought, wow, I didn't think he had that in him.

Then I googled him and his practice. He and his wife (another classmate) buy bad debt, [apparently] falsify records to obtain swift default judgments (they were sued for fraud and this was the specific allegation), and then garnish people's wages, adding attorneys and interest to the bill. And the book he wrote? It's about how to fire people. He has no experience in HR at all.

I felt like vomiting.

    1. Probably not. I'm not actually downtown, it turns out.

If people wanted to try for midtown global market, I'd be game, but I understand that's unlikely.

        1. I'd be game. Timing will depend on when we get done, if you can be flexible for a start between noon and one?

  1. I got to meet up with an old college classmate of mine a couple years ago for a wedding. She mentioned that she was an author. Trying to be supportive, I told her I might try to read it some day. She told me I probably wouldn't like the subject matter. I looked it up on Amazon, and it's all about how to practice pagan rituals and stuff like that. She was right, that's not really my cup of tea.

    1. My cousin coauthored a book documenting the history of efforts to make abortions impossible since Roe v. Wade. My father, being the good, supportive person he is, checked it out from the library. His review was that the first page was so incredibly poorly written that he couldn't make it to page two.

She is always on the Book of Face talking about how close she is to writing another book. She's somehow become a freelance writer for, among other things, Cosmopolitan.

      1. You are aware that a certain former resident of SBGville is the ethicist for the NYT, right? That floors me.

        1. He's not anymore. They did an overhaul about six months ago. Just in the last month they brought Judge John Hodgman back!

  2. looking on Amazon, it's not that hard to publish a "book" these days. Publish with a reputable press? That's a different thing.

    1. Messaged another former classmate this AM. She informed me that our mutual classmate and now author failed the MN Bar three (3) times. He "practices" in another state closer to you than me. We both agreed that we were curious about this book, but not curious enough to give them even $0.01 for it.

  3. Yesterday was the "Ha Ha, Yeah Right," deadline for HBH write-ups. I'm going to make Tuesday the actual deadline, with next Thursday being the "I'm really serious now" deadline

    1. Ah, that's why I had a email draft started with Kiki Cuyler as the subject line. I maybe should have made a better reminder.

  4. There is a big local law firm that has an investment fund set up that buys bad debt. The partners all put a chunk of their bonus in it.

I once has a $30 cc bill go to collections because we forgot to change the address when we moved. It cost us $60 to get rid of it but was told I was better off doing that than trying to dispute it at all. Nice racket they have going there!

  5. Anyone have experience dealing with home warranty services? One was included with the purchase of our home in June and I'm using it for the first time.

During a routine furnace tune-up (not through warranty service) some pretty big issues were discovered so I started the claim process. The service is sending someone out tomorrow, but I have a feeling there will be a bunch of hassles in my future. These places don't make money by happily replacing furnaces.

      yes.

I have a feeling there will be a bunch of hassles in my future.
      and, yes.

                1. Now I'm really sorry you won't be downtown for lunch. Glancing dubiously at you in person is so much more effective than glancing dubiously at you through my computer.
