FMD 4-8-16: I’ve Seen It Go Away

"When you've seen the very best, the rest can't hardly play.
I've seen it, [citizens], and I've seen it go away."
One of the best "Get off My Lawn!" songs ever.
----
I forgot to stop and put a schedule together for the next bunch of months of FMDs. I'll for sure do that after today.
If you haven't yet, sign up for a 5-8 week turn at FMD duties below. Say something like, "I'll do _ weeks!" and I'll put it all together. If there's a period that doesn't work for you mention it.

Update! Here's the schedule for nearly the remainder of the year:
Nibbish: 4/15 through 6/3
freealonzo: 6/10 through 7/8
MagUidhir: 7/15 through 8/12
Zack: 8/19 through 9/9
Can of Corn: 9/16 through 10/21
Philosopher: 10/28 through 12/2

  1. I couldn't remember if my period started this week or not.

I've put mine back into draft. It'll keep until next week.

    1. Sorry if I stepped on toes, I didn't believe anything had been decided. I checked when I started and nothing had been posted yet, but I didn't look in drafts or scheduled.

      1. Not at all. I sort of forgot that I was going to be writing them soon, and I couldn't remember if this week was the week I was supposed to start. I wrote something up on the spot. All toes remain un-stepped upon.

  2. I'll do 6 weeks. In the distant future. Put me towards the end of the schedule.

  3. I'm looking for new releases that might work for my summer mix. I have been so disconnected from new music lately, and I'm not sure when I'm going to get back on that horse given recent events (I'm tending towards sentimental, familiar music lately...). So if anyone has something jumping out to them as new and summer mixy (usually a bit pop, but not top 40, for my mix), well, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

    1. I don't think I've ever experienced a grief like yours, but when I think of the worst time for me I knew I was in a rough place because I couldn't listen to any music for about 2 months. Strangely, it was attending a musical (where I had no choice but to listen) that helped me. Music is a funny thing.

      1. Grief is weird. I couldn't go to any ballet classes after 9/11 (while living in NYC) because it brought up too much emotion. I'm pretty sure part of that reaction had to do with the live piano accompaniment.

        1. I listened to a lot of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Untitled 01"* and Neotropic's La Prochaine Fois after 9/11.
          Words didn't feel right.

*the only piece on album Dischord, it was written in response to the 1993 WTC bombing. In four movements: "Grief", "Anger", "Prayer", "Salvation".

      2. I've said this before but after my wife died I listened to Neutral Milk Hotel a lot. I found it both sad and inspirational. Music is funny that way.

        1. I was spinning Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes after my kind-of-girlfriend died with a month left in high school. I couldn't listen to anything else, and I couldn't have it be silent, either.

      3. Heh. We went to a musical last night (local high school where Philosofette is doing her student teaching), and I found having something to listen to that wasn't my selection was kind of nice. Fiddler On The Roof isn't exactly what I'd choose to listen to, but it was something different, and appreciated as such. Of course, today I'm right back to listening to my familiar selections.

    *Notes:
    6. Given that most of the song titles on this album follow the title's theme (See #3, plus "Friday Fish Fry", "Jerk Ribs", others), I wonder if the name of this track should have been "Crumble". That'd fit the lyrics as well as "Rumble".
    7. Track 8 from disc 1, "Matrix [for rooms]" (1999-2000). Liner notes:
"matrix [for rooms] forms an invisible pattern which fills the listening space.
the listener's movement transforms the phenomenon into his±her intrapersonal music."
    9. On disc 3.

    Notes:
    1. Definitely one of my favorite Beatles solo songs
    7. She's kind of a comic book character now, but Dolly Parton had some amazing songs back in the day

    1. I'm still lightly kicking myself for not getting "Live at Budokan" on vinyl for $5 back in Des Moines

    2. Ditto on #7, but her recent music is still just as good, as far as I can tell.
EAR and I were talking to the kids about country singers after Merle died. (HPR has started liking Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, and I had just started him on a little Hag.)
Who of the greats from that generation are left? Mentioned: Willie and Dolly.
EAR suggested Kristofferson and I said I wasn't sure if he counted, but probably.
Then she suggested Kenny Rogers and I said definitely not.

Wow... Kris is a year older than Hag was, Willie another three older, but Dolly's ten years younger (nine younger than Hag).
Anyone ever listen to Marty Stuart? He's played on a lot of records I like, but I can't say I know what he sounds like. Also, that hair just turned me off decades before I'd ever imagine listening to country on purpose.

      1. To me, Kristofferson is a better song writer than performer, not that he's a bad performer by any stretch. But his influence and importance to that era of country music is undeniable.

  6. Hey AMR, the Bottle Rockets are back in town again. This Tuesday at the Turf Club with Marshell Crenshaw, I can't go as I am heading off to Norway the next day.

    1. Speaking of concerts - I bit the bullet and got both Dr. Dog and EitS tickets. Add Sturgill and I've got a very good summer lineup going.

Unfortuantely, GA to Willie Nelson is sold out and I'm not dropping $240/ticket. I don't care if he is Willie Nelson.

      1. I definitely want to go to that Dr. Dog/Shakey Graves deal but I might have something going on that weekend. Hopefully it doesn't sell out and I can get tix later in summer after my plans get better established.

Oh and I have it on good Authority that Ryan Adams, Gary Clark Jr., and Death Cab for Cutie will be playing the Basilica Block Party this year.
