Friday Music Day: Live Music

Not sure who has May but I was here, nothing was up, and I went to a concert last night!

I've lived in the Eastside and/or the WBL area for the past 8 years, but I'd never been to the Myth for a show. It's sort of a weird venue; a dance club/concert space in what amounts to big box, strip mall, regular mall, sea of parking lots suburbia (but free parking ftw!). Once inside however, I was pleasantly surprised at the layout and acoustics.

Heard three bands: Joywave, Foals and Silversun Pickups. To be honest, I was most excited to see the first two bands, and rightly so as it turned out.

Joywave only had 30 minutes, but played some great stuff: Now, Parade, Nice House, Bad Dreams, Somebody New, Tongues, Destruction, Destruction (not a typo ... they played this song twice in a row. I've never seen that before). It was still light outside and the crowd wasn't into it yet, but the band didn't seem to care - lots of snarky self-deprecation and goofy commentary during the set, but they played some interesting & catchy tunes. Would've liked to hear another 5 songs.

Foals played an awesome set and rocked it out like it was the last show they'd ever play. I was really disappointed to miss them with Cage The Elephant and J. Roddy Walston & The Business a few years back, even more so after taking in their performance last night. Stuff I knew into stuff I didn't know, but seamlessly and with great flow, and live, they were cohesive in a way that I think some bands lack. Really impressive.

SSP have about a half-dozen songs I really like, and the remainder of their output feels like lots of sameness. That was the case live too. That being said, their production felt crisp and they sprinkled in some of their more popular stuff while playing lots off the newest album... actually, that could be why I wasn't really feeling it.

Next up for me is Sturgill, and then Wilco & Kurt Vile later in the summer. Not sure who else is coming ... what have you seen (or who are you planning to see)?

  2. Whoa. It's Friday. I've been spending all day thinking that yesterday was Wednesday and that today is Thursday.

Cool, thanks for the pinch hit, Corn.

I think the double-tap of "Destruction" is a nod to a goofy game they played on Spotify where they released an album called "Swish" that was just "Destruction" looped, like, ten times.

    1. Sure thing. To be honest, I was working in the same "Today's Thurs" state of mind. Had to check the calendar twice to make sure I wasn't jumping the gun on FMD.

That "Destruction" explanation makes sense - they were pretty amusing (thought they were joaking but then they played it all the way through).

  3. Last Monday, J & I went and saw the Frankie Cosmos, Eskimeaux, and Yowler show at the Entry. It's the first time I've ever got to take J to a show there, and she loved it. We both love tiny venues, and we'd been to the Triple Rock and Turf Club together, but it'd never worked out where we could go to an Entry show. It was very fun, and we took an Uber to the show and I had a couple of beers at a show for the first time in literally years. It was nice.

Next up for us is probably Black Mountain next Saturday after my graduation party. We have tickets for Savages May 22 in Winnipeg, Mitski & Japanese Breakfast July 7 in LA, and Boyz II Men and En Vogue August 10 in Moorhead. I'm probably going to see The Body and Angel Olsen in June, too.

Saw McCartney last night. I previously had the attitude that I didn't need to see these legacy acts but c'mon it's a Beatle (the cute one too!) and the rate that pop stars are dropping these days it could've been my only chance to see a Beatle ever (unless of course Ringo Star plays the Pizza Luce Block Party some year). Decent show and it was definitely cool to see some Beatles classics played.

Also going to Sturgill, Wilco, GBV. There's a Neil Young Tribute at the Turf Club in June I'm angling for. Some others I have my eye on.

    1. Let's not forget Brian Jonestown Massacre a week from tomorrow. Pretty sure we'll see Lydia Loveless sometime this summer. The Dr. Dog/Shakey Graves deal at Surley in July will be cool. Built to Spill is also coming in June or July. I'm probably not doing Rock the Garden but it's seems fairly decent.

      1. Also the Rock and Roll HOF discussion reminds me that Cheap Trick will be playing in Plymouth in June. The ticket prices are kind of sucky so not sure if I will partake. If the weather is good, my try for some day of tix via stub hub or something.

    2. Eric Copeland “Scones and Bull” Alien in a Garbage Dump

  7. I have tickets for Sturgill and Wilco as well. Sounds like those may be potential caucus dates.

Hoping to get to some more this summer.

  8. So FW and I are just doing a Spotify playlist for the wedding instead of a DJ. It's cheaper, we have more control, and we'll always have a record of what we played. Any "Must have" songs you guys can think of? I'd love to have a bit of the WGOM at the wedding via your contributions. THe list so far is a mix of songs that mean something to us and just stuff we think will be fun to have a party with.

    The Promise - Sturgill Simpson
Stand By You - Rachel Platten
Shut Up And Dance - Walk The Moon
I Found You - Alabama Shakes
Traveling Alone - Jason Isbell (*high five* CoC above^ "Traveling Alone" buddies)
Want to Want Me - Jason Derulo

You can leave suggestions here or if we're Spotify friends look for my playlist "McStewart Wedding 2016"

      1. JUMP AROUND - House of Pain
Or you could just put that on repeat. If you can change the intro to some other obscure horn samples, all the better.
Mix in the Jason Nevins and Pete Rock remixes for variety.

On "Conversation", go with the Elvis original.

For our wedding, EAP's uncle brought his soundsystem and DJed off mix CDs he made from our wishlist (and CDs). He basically just hit "play".
Afterwards, he gave us the CDs. The only song also on the above list was "Jump Around".
        Others:
        *Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive"
        *Van Morrison "Brown Eyed Girl"
*Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun"
        *Bangles "Walk Like an Egyptian"
*Fatboy Slim "Rockafella Skank", "Praise You"

        *Madonna "Express Yourself"
        *Basement Jaxx "Rendez-Vu"
        *Eric Clapton "Wonderful Tonight"
Whitney Houston "My Love Is Your Love" (but I couldn't get the 14-minute epic Jonathan Peters Remix)
        Outkast "Rosa Parks"
Johnny Cash "I've Been Everywhere", "Ring of Fire"
Toni Braxton "You're Making Me High"

Santana and Rob Thomas "Smooth" (Under Duress)
        plus four Polkas

Those starred ones on top should be pretty universal. Some of the others may not play for a lot of audiences. Some obviously are of their time.
Overall, I was quite happy that I could get all of the stuff above into a dance party with all my friends and family at it.

      1. A: To answer questions we know someone will someday ask.
        Q: What are tags for?

        1. I can't believe I completely forgot Big Star until I read through the tag. Should have been a no-brainer.

      1. I am impressed that you can remember. I have basically zero recollection of any of the specific songs from our entire reception.

    2. Late to the conversation, no only quickly per used the previous lists, but I recommend:

Something involving twisting, and possibly shouting.
Chicken dance and some polka (beer barrel?) because MN.
We always request Paradise by the Dashboard light at weddings.
      Hey ya
      Shake it off
Fishing in the dark, (depending on how country your crowd is)

      1. I believe I demanded no "Paradise".
"Fishing" was played by my bride's request.
Chicken Dance was a fight I lost, but I did get the dance that our priest ( from my home parish ) led before he had to drive home.

  9. And now that I have time: let's get random

    1. Regina Spektor - "The Calculation" - Far
    2. The Avett Brothers - "Skin And Bones" - Magpie and The Dandelions
    3. Pixies - "Gouge Away" - Doolittle
    4. Meat Puppets - "New Gods" - II
    5. Minor Threat - "Out Of Step - With The World" - First Two Seven Inches

    6. Modest Mouse - "Dog Paddle" - This Is A Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About
    7. Cold War Kids - "Saint John" - Robbers & Cowards
    8. Junip - "Turn To The Assassin" - Fields
    9. Stevie Wonder - "Black Man" - Songs In The Key Of Life
    10. Leslie Odom Jr. - "Dear Theodosia" - Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast Recording)**

    ** Yes.
