July 4, 2016: Peaceful, Easy Freedom

We who have witnessed the obscenity of war and experienced its horror and terrible consequences have an obligation to rise above our pain and suffering and turn the tragedy of our lives into a triumph.

  1. Twins get rid of Arcia only to call up Kennys Vargas two weeks later.

    TWINS BASEBALL!!

    1. Well, with Plouffe out, someone has to be the reserve first baseman. What's more interesting to me is that they've now discovered that Plouffe's "sore rib" is actually a cracked rib. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to diagnose a cracked rib.

      1. seriously. This is an insane move. I cannot imagine how anyone else in the league counters this, except maybe by Gilloolying him or Steph (or both).

        1. I'm guessing the Thunder get worse by far more than the Warriors get better.

Wolves just get LeBron and it should be a fun semifinal matchup

          1. the deal is more complex, and less exciting, than I'd originally thought. According to the 4Ltr, GS will renounce their rights to Barnes, trade Bogut to Dallas for ???, and renounce their rights to Ezeli.

That leaves a pretty big hole in the middle defensively for the Warriors. I assume that this means that Varejao and Speights get more minutes (assuming Varejao comes back), which I don't think is sustainable. Or maybe they think that Damian Jones will be ready to play significant minutes as a rookie, given all the talent around him.

            1. Or maybe KAT is going to tear through their thin, small front court on his way to a championship.

          1. Good question. I definitely expect more from him than either Duncan or West delivered this year.

  2. rental home improvement update: Two trips to homedepot before 10 am on a holiday. First trip procured the supply lines to replace the copper lines that the fully licensed and insured plumbers fucked up when they installed my dishwasher. Second trip was to buy a replacement faucet for the brand new one I purchased from lowes yesterday. Third trip was to lowes to return faulty faucet purchased yesterday. I hate improving homes I don't live in.

  3. I don't follow the NBA very much but I do root for San Antonio. I see that they signed Pau Gasol. Is he still a good player, or is he at the end of the line?

    1. Still good. He can give 20-25 quality minutes per night for a couple more years. this season for Chicago, 16.5 ppg and 8.9 rpg in 31 minutes.

        1. I doubt it. Aldridge and Leonard are going to get the lion's share of the touches and shots for that team. This year, they were the only Spurs with more than Tony Parker's 710 FGA (Leonard had 1,090, Aldridge 1,045).

I could see Gasol getting around 10 FGA/g, which would translate to 700-800 shots on the season. This year, he got almost 14 FGA/g with the Bulls.

the Spurs move the ball and spread the wealth, but Leonard and Aldridge are gonna get way more shots than anyone else.

          1. But this does raise an interesting (to me) bar question: is Pau Gasol a Hall of Famer?

6 All-Star games, 2 NBA titles, ROY, 2 2nd-team All-NBA and 2 3rd-team All-NBA, 18.2/9.5/3.3 career ppg/rpg/apg. He will probably end his career in the top 40 all-time in points, top 25 all-time in rebounds and blocks. I think he has a slightly better case than Chris Bosh, and should be in easily, particularly when you add in his international experience.

  4. Tried to do a load of laundry tonight and the washing machine wouldn't power on. The breaker was tripped so I reset it and still nothing.

I traced it to a served power cord. Seems when dropped the upper pipe when doing the dryer vent, it landed on the washing machine cord. So I guess I got cut twice.

    1. Whoa there, I found an extra 120v cable from an Xbox that I had laying around. Spliced it in and we're back rolling.

      1. You had the exact opposite home improvement experience I did. I kind of hate you right now.

        1. Heh, I'm not gonna lie, that was part of my motivation for sharing the experience. But mostly it was because these sort of happy resolutions aren't how it usually goes.

For some reason, though, I've had to spend a good of time my that these improvements/fixes are, in fact, safe.
