Minor Details: Games of July 7-8

Daniel Palka makes a successful AAA debut.  Randy Rosario starts both ends of a doubleheader (sort of).  Niko Goodrum hits a homer for two different teams on the same day (sort of).  Jose Berrios and Kohl Stewart make poor starts.

GAMES OF JULY 7

ROCHESTER 8, LEHIGH VALLEY 7 IN LEHIGH VALLEY

Trailing 7-3 after five, the Red Wings tied it with a four-run sixth and went into the lead to stay on Daniel Palka's home run leading off the seventh.  Pat Dean struggled, allowing seven runs on twelve hits and one walk with three strikeouts in four innings.  D. J. Baxendale pitched two scoreless innings, keeping his AAA ERA at 0.00 through 7.2 innings.  He's allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out six.  J. T. Chargois struck out three in two shutout innings.  One might say that Palka's AAA debut was successful--he hit two home runs and a double, going 3-for-5.  Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-5 with two doubles.

CHATTANOOGA 10, BIRMINGHAM 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts broke a 1-1 tie in a big way, scoring six runs in the fourth to take control of the game.  Aaron Slegers got the benefit of the big inning but held up his end of the bargain, going six innings and giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Zach Granite was 3-for-5 with a double and is now batting .306.  D. J. Hicks was 2-for-5 with a home run, his sixth.  Travis Harrison hit his fifth home run and Niko Goodrum hit his first.  Goodrum was 1-for-4 to make his average .375,

FORT MYERS 5, BRADENTON 0 IN BRADENTON (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

A three-run third, highlighted by homers by T. J. White and Niko Goodrum, gave the Miracle a 4-0 lead.  Randy Rosario had struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk, before the game was suspended.  Edgar Corcino also homered.  Joe Maloney was the only Miracle player with more than one hit, going 2-for-2 with a triple.

FORT MYERS 8, BRADENTON 3 IN BRADENTON (7 INNINGS--SCHEDULED GAME)

The Miracle scored three in the fourth and four in the sixth on their way to a win.  Randy Rosario kind of pitched both ends of the double header, as he had started the suspended game and started this one.  He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  T. J. White was 2-for-4 and is now batting .308.  Nick Gordon was also 2-for-4.  Daniel Kihle was 2-for-3 with a double in his high-A debut, giving him an OPS of 1.667.

CEDAR RAPIDS 1, WISCONSIN 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

Cody Stashak was brilliant, striking out eight in eight shutout innings while giving up one hit and three walks.  The lone run came in the second when Jaylin Davis doubled, went to third on a single, and scored on a ground out.  Davis went 2-for-3 on the game.  Luis Arraez was 0-for-4 and is batting .328.  Casey Scoggins made his Class A debut and went 1-for-3.

BRISTOL 7, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN BRISTOL (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Lewin Diaz hit a two-run homer in the fourth to tie it 3-3, but the Pirates scored four in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game.  Domenick Carlini pitched four innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits and one walk with two strikeouts.  Alex Kirilloff was 2-for-3 with a double and is batting .423.  Brandon Lopez was 0-for-1 with two walks and is batting .381.  Ariel Montesino is 0-for-4 and is batting .364.  Travis Blankenhorn was 0-for-4 and is batting .306.  Trey Cabbage was 0-for-2 and is batting .300.

BRISTOL 4, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN BRISTOL (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

The Pirates scored a single run in four of the six innings in which they batted.  Tyler Wells struck out six in 3.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks.  Alex Kirilloff was 1-for-3 and is batting .414.  Brandon Lopez was 1-for-2 with a walk and is batting .391 with an OBP of .517.

GCL RAYS 7, GCL TWINS 1 AT RAYS

The Twins made three errors in the third inning, contributing to four Rays runs and the loss of the game.  Bo Hellquist pitched four innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Moises Gomez struck out five in three shutout innings--he has started his season with 6.1 shutout innings despite allowing six hits and five walks.  He has struck out seven.  The Twins had only four hits.  Aaron Whitefield was 1-for-3 and is batting .300.

DSL TWINS 5, DSL ORIOLES2 3 AT ORIOLES2 (COMPLETION OF SUSPENDED GAME)

The Twins trailed 2-1 after five, but two errors and a walk contributed to a three-run sixth that put them ahead to stay.  Edwar Colina started and pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.  Carlos Suniaga struck out nine in four innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on three hits and one walk.  He now has an ERA of 1.08 and a WHIP of 1.01 with 41 strikeouts and 9 walks in 27.2 innings.  Ruben Santana was 2-for-4 to lead the offense.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-4 with a double and is batting .347.  Victor Tademo was 1-for-4 with a double and is batting .333.

DSL ORIOLES2 6, DSL TWINS 1 AT ORIOLES2 (SCHEDULED GAME--7 INNINGS)

The Twins scored first, but the Orioles2 scored twice in each of the first two innings to cruise to victory.  Luis Bellorin lasted only two innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 3-for-4, giving him the majority of the Twins' five hits.  Jorge Parra was 0-for-2 with a walk and is batting .353.  Agustin Marte was 0-for-4 and is batting .327.  Darling Cuesto was 0-for-1 with a walk and is batting .304.

GAMES OF JULY 8

SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE 7, ROCHESTER 5 IN SCRANTON/WILKES-BARRE

Tyler Austin's two-run homer in the sixth put the RailRiders up 6-5 and they never trailed again.  The Red Wings scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning.  Jose Berrios struck out five in 5.2 innings but allowed six runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks.  The Red Wings had sixteen hits but stranded thirteen, going 5-for-19 with men in scoring position.  It would seem to be not easy to have nineteen at-bats with men in scoring position, and harder still to only score five of them.  Tommy Field was 3-for-4 with a triple and a double.  Adam Brett Walker II was 3-for-4 with a walk and James Beresford was also 3-for-4.  Daniel Palka was 1-for-5 and is batting .400 (4-for-10).

BIRMINGHAM 10, CHATTANOOGA 5 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Barons scored three in the first and never trailed.  Kohl Stewart lasted only 3.2 innings, yielding seven runs (four earned) on eleven hits and a walk with one strikeout.  Zack Jones remained unscored upon in AA, going 1.1 scoreless innings to make his streak 5.1 innings.  He has given up two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.  Ryan Walker and D. J. Hicks each went 2-for-3 with a double.  Niko Goodrum was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .316.

DUNEDIN 2, FORT MYERS 1 FORT MYERS

Two singles, a walk, and a ground out brought home the winning run in the sixth.  After a rough start in high-A, Randy LeBlanc had his third good game out of four, striking out ten in seven innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a double.  Daniel Kihle was 0-for-2 with a walk and is batting .400 (2-for-5).  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4 and is batting .370.

KANE COUNTY 1, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The lone run came on a Colin Bray homer leading off the third inning.  Lachlan Wells continues to pitch well, giving up one run on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts in five innings.  Williams Ramirez followed with five strikeouts in three shutout innings of relief.  The Kernels had only four hits, all singles.  Luis Arraez was 1-for-4 to make his average .327.

ELIZABETHTON AT BRISTOL

Rained out.

GCL TWINS 8, GCL RED SOX 3 AT RED SOX

The Twins scored all their runs in two innings, getting five in the second and three in the third.  Miguel De Jesus struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.  Callan Pearce gave up an unearned run, but his ERA remains at 0.00 through six innings.  Jorge Andrade was 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk and is batting .364.  Jean Carlos Arias was 2-for-3 and Gorge Munoz was 2-for-4.

DSL ORIOLES2 6, DSL TWINS 5 AT TWINS

The Twins scored three in the eighth and the tying run on third with two out, but their last four batters were retired.  Edwar Colina pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Jorge Parra was 3-for-4 with a double and is batting .382.  Mariano Calcano was 2-for-4 with a triple.  Yeltsin Encarnacion and Humberto Maldonado were each 2-for-4 with a double.  Victor Tademo was 0-for-4 and is batting .312.  Edgar Herrera was 1-for-2 with two walks and is batting .306.
