2016 Game 88: Twins at Rangers

First Pitch 2:05 p.m. CDT

Tommy Milone (1-2, 5.45 ERA, 25 K, 1.569 WHIP)
AJ Griffin (3-0, 3.06 ERA, 45 K, 1.213 WHIP)

So here we are, heading into the All-Star break in sole possession of last place in the AL Central, and the worst record in the American League. Only the hapless Braves keep us from being the worst team in baseball, and even then by just a slim margin. We're 21 games out of the division lead and 17.5 games out of the wild card race. That's the bad news. The good news is that the Twins are finally showing signs of life, and management if finally showing some willingness to just let the young guys play and get the valuable major league experience they need. Buxton, Kepler, Sano, Vargas, Park - these are the stars of the future, and I'd be fine with watching them shine the rest of the season.

Play ball!

  1. Race to the bottom update: The Twins are 31-56 through 87 games. The 1962 Mets were 24-63 through 87 games and were just starting an eleven game losing streak. I think we can safely say the Twins have put the 1962 Mets in the rear-view mirror.

The worst record for a Twins team was the 1982 Twins, who finished 60-102. Through 87 games, that team was 28-59. However, that team was just starting a twenty-one game stretch in which they would play nearly .500 ball (10-11). The current club is going to have to stay (relatively) hot to keep its lead.

  2. I don't know why they bother to have rules about when you can and can't challenge things if they're not going to go by them.

I wonder, can you protest a game based on a claim that a challenge should not have been allowed to be made?

  3. They need to change this rule. It is beyond awful. While yes, perhaps video can detect that a player's foot came off the base by a micron, what video CANNOT do is tell whether or not the fielder nudged the player's leg off the base. What incentive is there for the shortstop not to gang tackle the player and then ask for a replay that their foot came off?

    1. I mean, hell, technically, no atoms can ever touch, so Rosario's foot never really touched second. Then again, he couldn't have possibly been tagged then either.

Depends on what you mean by "touch". 🙂

[of course, in nuclear fusion, nuclei, well, fuse. that's pretty touchy]

    2. Agreed.
Im sure it happens to a lot of teams, but it seems like the Twins get a runner erased once a week because of that

  4. I disagree with Provus about bunting here. Escobar does not seem to me to be a very good bunter, and Suzuki is slow. There's a good chance that if they bunt they'll mess it up somehow.

    1. Although the season has been awful, I am still excited to see Sano, Buxton, and Kepler in 2018.

We just need some pitching to come through by then.
