Minor Details: Games of July 16-17

Saturday had comeback wins.  Sunday had Jose Berrios.

GAMES OF JULY 16

ROCHESTER 4, NORFOLK 0 IN ROCHESTER

The Red Wings scored all of their runs in the fourth inning.  Daniel Palka homered (his third), Wilfredo Tovar had an RBI double, and Carlos Paulino delivered a two-run single.  Andrew Albers pitched six shutout innings despite giving up eight hits and two walks.  D. J. Baxendale pitched two perfect innings.  In 10.1 AAA innings he has given up no runs, three hits, and two walks with eight strikeouts.  Paulino went 2-for-3.

CHATTANOOGA 8, MOBILE 7 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts led 6-1 after four, fell behind 7-6 after six and a half, and scored two in the seventh to win.  Shannon Wilkerson had a two-run double to bring home the tying and go-ahead runs.  Tyler Jay pitched well for four innings but lost his control in the fifth, issuing his only three walks of the game and seeing them lead to four runs.  For the game, he pitched five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.  Trevor Hildenberger struck out two in a scoreless inning.  His AA ERA is now 0.81 with an 0.72 WHIP and 39 strikeouts with 5 walks in 33.1 innings.  D. J. Hicks was 3-for-5.  Zach Granite was 3-for-5 with a double to raise his average to .306.  Niko Goodrum was 2-for-4 and is batting .311.  Leonardo Reginatto was 1-for-4 and is batting .302.  Mitch Garver hit a home run, his ninth.

FORT MYERS 2, TAMPA 1 IN TAMPA (13 INNINGS)

T. J. White hit a home run (his fifth) in the eighth to tie it 1-1 and Tanner Witt singled and later scored on an error in the thirteenth to give the Miracle a win.  Sam Clay managed to pitch five shutout innings despite giving up seven walks.  He also allowed three hits and struck out three.  Michael Theofanopoulos struck out five in three shutout innings of relief to get the win.  Joe Maloney was 3-for-6 with two doubles.  Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 and is batting .304.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-2 and is batting .341.  Witt was 2-for-6.

CEDAR RAPIDS 13, FORT WAYNE 10 IN FORT WAYNE (10 INNINGS)

The Kernels fell behind 8-1 after four, got back in it with a six-run fifth, took a 10-8 lead after eight only to see the TinCaps tie it with two in the ninth, and finally scored three in the tenth for the win.  The first two batters of the tenth went out, but they were followed by four consecutive singles (and two stolen bases).  Sam Gibbons had a rough go, lasting only four innings and allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Kuo Hua Lo pitched three shutout innings of relief to drop his ERA to 1.55.  Cedar Rapids out-hit Fort Wayne 23-9.  Casey Scoggins was 4-for-7 with a double and is batting .308.  Zander Weil was 3-for-7 with two homers, his ninth and tenth.  Luis Arraez was 3-for-6 with a walk and is batting .337.  Kevin Garcia was 3-for-6 with a double and is  batting .304.  The Kernels were 10-for-26 with men in scoring position but still stranded fifteen runners.

PRINCETON 5, ELIZABETHTON 1 IN PRINCETON

It was scoreless through six, but in the seventh Rafelin Lorenzo hit a two-run double and later scored to give the Rays all the runs they would need.  Starter Ryan Mason pitched four shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Ariel Montesino was 2-for-3 and is batting .383.  Alex Kirilloff was 2-for-4 and is batting .316.  Roberto Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a triple.

GCL RED SOX 4, GCL TWINS 2 AT RED SOX

A double steal of second and home gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in the fifth, but the Red Sox scored four in the sixth to take control of the game.  Brady Anderson pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks with three strikeouts.  Matt Jones made his professional debut and walked both batters he faced, also throwing a wild pitch.  Both runners came around to score, giving him an infinite ERA as a professional.  We hope he'll get another chance.  Gorge Munoz was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.

GAMES OF JULY 17

ROCHESTER 3, NORFOLK 2 IN ROCHESTER

The Red Wings scored single runs in each of the first three innings, and that was all they needed.  Jose Berrios struck out nine in six shutout innings, allowing four hits and two walks.  Buddy Boshers pitched a perfect inning to lower his ERA to 1.21.  J. T. Chargois pitched a perfect inning to lower his ERA to 1.30.  Adam Brett Walker II was 2-for-4 with a double.  Tommy Field and Daniel Palka were each 2-for-4.

MOBILE 6, CHATTANOOGA 5 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts led by 3-0 and 5-2, but a Rudy Flores three-run double in the eighth pushed the BayBears over the top.  Felix Jorge pitched well for six innings, then struggled so that his line reads 7.2 innings, four runs, five hits, and two walks with one strikeout.  Ryan Walker and Mitch Garver were each 2-for-4 with a double.  Zach Granite was also 2-for-4 and is batting .309.

FORT MYERS 4, LAKELAND 1 IN FORT MYERS

LaMonte Wade broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the sixth to lift the Miracle over the Flying Tigers.  Fernando Romero, in his fourth high-A start, continues to pitch well, striking out six in six innings while allowing just one run on five hits and a walk.  His ERA is now 2.17 with a WHIP of 1.03.  Wade was 2-for-4 to raise his average to .354.  Tanner Witt was also 2-for-4 with a home run, his second.  Trey Vavra and Alex Perez were each 2-for-4.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 and is batting .300

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, FORT WAYNE 6 IN FORT WAYNE

The TinCaps led 3-1 after two, but Nelson Molina's two-run double in the sixth gave the Kernels the lead and a three-run seventh provided them with insurance.  Eduardo Del Rosario struck out seven in six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk.  Jaylin Davis was 3-for-4 with a home run (his third) and a double to make his average .333.  In his last five games, he is 9-for-20 with three homers.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-5 and is batting .338.  Casey Scoggins was 2-for-5 and is batting  .318.

ELIZABETHTON 11, PRINCETON 6 IN PRINCETON

The Twins scored three in the third to take a 4-1 lead.  It was 5-1 through eight, but then came a ninth inning that must have seemed to take forever.  The Twins got six in the bottom half of the inning, but the Rays scored five in the bottom half, helped by four consecutive walks and three wild pitches.  Starter Sean Poppen struck out seven in five innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits and three walks.  Patrick McGuff ran his professional scoreless string to 10.1 innings, striking out three in 2.1 innings.  Ariel Montesino was 4-for-5 with a double and is batting .423.  Amaurys Minier was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Alex Kirilloff was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second, and is batting .323.  Andre Jernigan was 2-for-5 with a home run and a double.  Robert Molina was 0-for-5 and is batting .031 (1-for-32) on the season.

  1. heck of a Saturday - I "liked" this bit:

    The Kernels were 10-for-26 with men in scoring position but still stranded fifteen runners.

  2. Jose Berrios struck out nine in six shutout innings, allowing four hits and two walks.

    Since being sent down: 72.1 IP, 74 K, 24 BB, 6 HR, 2.74 ERA. That's a 9.2 K/9 and a 3.0 BB/9.
