  1. No movies. It's probably been longer since I watched a movie than maybe ever.

    TV shows, though.

    * The finale of Game of Thrones was great. I liked theis season quite a bit more than the last one (Hardhome aside, obviously), and they really sick the landing with the last couple of episodes.

    * Linds and I have been watching Jane the Virgin. It's fun. The narrator is funny.

    1. I also got all caught up on GoT. I loved season 6. It's like they learned pretty much all of the lessons they needed to learn from the first couple seasons.

  2. I watched "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" last night.
I liked it. Marilyn Monroe is funny. The whole "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" sequence is a lot better in context.

  3. I went to the new Ghostbusters. Not great but entertaining enough.

Started watching the United States of Tara. Just a couple episodes in. Had been searching for a good half hour show. So far, so good.

  4. Watching Mr. Robot and it's a little slow. The 90 minute episodes aren't helping.

Also watching the awkwardly titled The Night Of. It's as if The Wire focused on everyone but the cops. J.D. Williams plays the non-dope-slinging Bodie while Michael K. Williams is Omar but with the respect Avon Barksdale had. Really good so far.

  5. I watched "Lava Fields", an Icelandic-language murder mystery story in four parts. Much like the Icelandic version of the Welsh "Hinterlands", but with Iceland (like the people of Portlandia's Portland) instead of Wales (more like "Deliverance").
Similarities extend to the main detective's backstory tragedy.
I really enjoyed it and wish there was more.

  6. went to the new Star Trek with the Boy. Thoroughly entertained. It was a mostly forgettable summer action flick, with nice camaraderie amongst the crew and enough humor to give it a feel very similar to TOS (but with way better special effects) while retaining the strong ensemble cast approach of TNG.

  7. I blasted through all of season 3 of BoJack Horseman last weekend. I think it's probably my favorite show on TV. Very excited it's been renewed for season 4, and I eagerly anticipate feeling like crap mid-summer 2017!

When we were at Anime Expo, we were able to attend the world premier of Makoto Shinkai's new film your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) , which was incredibly good. Shinkai is my favorite working anime director by far, and 5 centimeters per second is one of my 10 favorite films of all time, and this might even be better? I need to watch it again, badly. It's been licensed by Funimation, and they're releasing it in theaters, so I'm hoping it plays in the Cities. I will 100% be driving down to watch it again. I just hope it's not a long wait, given that it's already subtitled!

Haven't had much time to watch anything else. I'm a couple episodes behind on Mr. Robot and have to catch up next week. I'm going to start Stranger Things or The Night Of soon, too.

    1. I fell asleep partway through Bojack episode 1 and never went back.
I should fix that, I'm searching for something. I started "Chuck" and that's OK, but EAR didn't take to it like I thought she would, so I may give up.
EAR also gave up pretty quickly on season 2 of "Madame Secretary" with Tea Leoni. I'll agree that it went earnest and actionless fast, but I still hold out hope that they're setting up an episode or 2 of wall-to-wall bomb explosions to balance things out.

      1. I'm halfway through season three of Bojack and adore it. This is the best season so far, and Bojack, a guy with a horse head but human hands, is the most realistic lead character on TV.

I caught a bunch of Chuck when I lived with my best friend and his wife for a couple of months after I got to Minnesota. It is so...ordinary.

        1. It is so...ordinary

I figured that would be your reaction. For some reason, the first three seasons really grabbed my fancy.

  8. We continue to work our way through The West Wing. There are episodes that miss, but overall, I can't recommend this show enough. I thought once would be enough (some 5 years ago?) but I'm loving it the second time through too.

Agents Of Shield - Season 3. About 6 episodes left in the season, and, is it just me, or does this season kind of blow? It's lacked believable character motivation, more than anything. I'll see it through to the end, but I miss when it was good.

  9. Finally started plowing through the Netflix queue. Loved The Martian. Really really loved Mad Max Fury Road (nibbish's fifteen word Survivor description is perfect; I usually don't like sci-fi action movies but this was so different, crazy, and unique). Enjoyed Ex Machina a lot as well. Going to see Jason Bourne tonight with my brother who has long been obsessed with Jason Bourne. Have The Room to watch tomorrow night.

On Netflix, watched first two seasons of Broadchurch and thought it was pretty good although the second one lagged a little. Also started Bojack Horseman, and the second episode was hilarious including the spoof Keith Olbermann voiced by Keith Olbermann.

We've decided to rewatch all of The Wire again.

    1. I think the next time I have a whole day without the are and kids, I'll do a marathon of all the Mad Max movies. That sounds like an awesome day.

    2. Are "Mad Max" and "Martian" on Netflix? I'd've expected I'd see something so big when it shows up. (I stopped reading "New on Netflix").

  10. Oh yeah, I also watched Hail, Caesar. I loved it. I have no idea why it got panned, since it was absolutely entertaining.

  11. Worth a note:
The Dreamworks animated film "Home" is very popular at our house with all six of us. It's probably been watched half-a-dozen times.

    1. I can't stand that main actor, and his stupid speech pattern through the whole movie was insufferable. Also, Rhianna, cause whatever.

      1. Is it possible for me to agree with both of you? Because yes, to both it being overall very good but also annoying voice.

      2. I've found that the inability of anyone in my family to mimic that speech pattern really reduces any potential annoyance.
If the kids could have copied it, I would have burnt the disc something related to the movie.

CER (now a teenager!) created her own pig-Latinate she calls "O-Northian".
Just English with long vowels inserted between every syllable, more or less.
I've had to ban it at times, because it's hard enough with 4 kids all talking over themselves in regular English, but when one or two requires decryption: NO.
