Minor Details: Games of September 1

The Red Wings stay alive.  The GCL Twins force a playoff game.  Poor defense spoils a tremendous game by Lachlan Wells.

ROCHESTER 1, LEHIGH VALLEY 0 IN ROCHESTER

Tommy Field hit a home run in the fifth inning and Nick Greenwood took it from there.  Greenwood pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and no walks with five strikeouts.  Buddy Boshers struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings, making his ERA 1.04 with 29 strikeouts in 26 innings.  Field's home run was his eleventh.  Mitch Garver was 1-for-3 and is batting .304.  Tanner English was called up from Fort Myers to play center field and was 0-for-3.  The Red Wings now trail Lehigh Valley by 2.5 games for the wild card spot.  They have four games remaining, all with the IronPigs.

CHATTANOOGA 3, JACKSON 2 IN JACKSON

With the scored tied 2-2, Zach Granite led off the seventh with a single, stole second, took third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on the go-ahead run on a ground out.  Stephen Gonsalves pitched just three innings--I don't know why--and gave up two runs on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts.  Todd Van Steensel followed with three shutout innings of relief.  Stuart Turner was 2-for-3.  Zach Granite was 2-for-5 with a double and is batting .302.  He also has fifty-four stolen bases, which is something we probably should have been following all season but I don't remember seeing it mentioned anywhere else, either.  The Lookouts remain three games out of first place and their elimination number is two.

BRADENTON AT FORT MYERS (4 1/2 INNINGS--SUSPENDED)

Christian Ibarra tripled and scored in the first, but Jordan Luplow hit a two-run homer in the fifth to put the Marauders on top when the game was suspended.  It will be completed today, weather permitting.  The Miracle is 3.5 games behind St. Lucie and their elimination number is two.

WISCONSIN 4, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN WISCONSIN

A three-run seventh put the Timber Rattlers up 4-0 and they were not threatened.  The Kernels made three errors, which spoiled an otherwise excellent performance by Lachlan Wells.  He struck out eleven in 6.1 innings, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and no walks.  The other Wisconsin run was also unearned.  Wells now has an ERA of 1.77 and a WHIP of 1.02.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk and is batting .350.  Nelson Molina was 2-for-3 and is batting .307.

GREENEVILLE AT ELIZABETHTON

Cancelled due to wet grounds.  The E-Twins will host Johnson City in the first game of a best-of-three playoff series Friday.

GCL TWINS 3, GCL RAYS 2 AT RAYS

The Rays scored two in the first, but the Twins got one in the second, scored on a double play in the fifth to tie it, and took the lead on a passed ball in the sixth.  Moises Gomez struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and one walk, raising his ERA to 1.19.  Matz Schutte followed with three shutout innings of relief.  Jhon Alvarez was 2-for-3.  Aaron Whitefield was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .303.  The win, coupled with a Red Sox split of a doubleheader, puts the Twins and Red Sox in a tie for first.  They will have a one-game playoff this morning, weather permitting.

    1. I was pretty skeptical when I posted this, but I hadn't heard anything that said it was called off. At least they got yesterday's games in. I was afraid they wouldn't be able to play yesterday and that the GCL would just declare the season over with the Twins a half game back.
