  1. The Twins’ entry in the Arizona Fall League this year is the Surprise Saguaros. I’ll try to give more-or-less daily updates on how Twins players are doing. As there’s only one game, though, it didn’t seem necessary to do a separate post, so I’ll just put them in the daily cup.

Surprise took the lead with three in the third, led 4-1 after six, and scored four in the seventh on the way to an 11-2 victory over Mesa. Nick Gordon went 3-for-4 with a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. Mitch Garver was 1-for-2 with three walks, scoring once and driving in one. Tanner English was 0-for-4. Mason Melotakis pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

If you’re interested, Tim Tebow played left field for Scottsdale and went 0-for-3. If you’re not interested, he still went 0-for-3.

  2. Once more the lab dropped the ball on my pre-surgery lab tests, just like last time. I guess if I'm hoping for things to work out the same as my first hip, I'll have to put up with it.

  3. So, apparently Ron Washington won the consolation prize and was named Atlanta's new third base coach. He was Oakland's third base coach the past two seasons. I can't put my finger on another former skipper making a lateral move like that recently.

    1. Also, Ray Miller, after managing the Twins, was pitching coach under Jim Leyland in Pittsburgh for a long time before becoming pitching coach for Davey Johnson in Baltimore.

        1. No wonder why the Twins struggled with their young core in '85 & '86 – they didn't have a manager or a closer during much of that time!

          1. Mauch was the only real manager they had from '72 up to Kelly. Of course, with an owner with $$ anyone can look like a good manager. And let's not talk about any particular "closer" please

            1. I would suggest that, while not a great manager overall, Billy Gardner was a good manager for his time. A lot of the Twins good, young players developed under his tenure. He might not have been responsible for all of that, but at least he didn't get in the way of it and mess it up. He had the patience to put guys into the lineup or the rotation and let them play. He didn't call players lazy or threaten to send them to AAA every time they hit a rough patch. He allowed his young players to develop at their own pace, and there's something to be said for that.

              1. I always felt that "Slick" didn't do a whole lot of anything, actually. Maybe that's what they needed then. Was Gardner the one who lived in a Motel 6 during his stay?

    2. I am surprised Washington hasn't returned to managing, considering how successful his Rangers teams were. I'm wondering how resistant he is to using the more advanced sabermetrics.

      1. The piece I read suggested that Washington, while a gifted infield coach, has a very traditional perspective on in-game tactics & roster strategy. Rightly or not, clubs may also be wary of the personal issues he's struggled with over the last decade or so.

        1. It doesn't look any different on iOS. (I don't use mobile browsing, so it should appear the same way it does in Safari for macOS/OS X). It might be loading a tad slower, though.

            1. A lot of things on the backend changed and I haven't tuned any of it yet. I checked why some parts were slow and I think they will be easy fixes. If not, I still have other ideas. Basically, the list of 12 posts on the front page is complex.
