December 26, 2016: Icy Roads

So, did everyone get the Martin Logan Motion60XT floorstanding speakers that they wanted in their stockings? Anyway, drive carefully, unless you're one of those Minnesota expats, in which case you can proceed as normal.

  1. After the loss of George Michael yesterday, a Facebook friend posted "At this year's major award shows, they should play a montage of all the living celebrities to save time."

    1. My aunt was an er nurse in Hennepin county for years. She had all sorts of stuck in the bottom stories that almost always started with the the phrase, "I sat down and the _________ just popped in".

  2. After years of using one shoulder messenger style bike bags I made the switch to the two strap book bag. I shouldn't say that I made the switch as it was dr. Chop who bought me a Duluth pack for Christmas, and I have nothing but positives to report. I ride my bike every day, and redistributing the weaight of my lock lunch and what have you is delightful. I wish unsold have done this years ago.

As an aside, how nice are Duluth packs? Simple yet elegant construction and no nonsense design. Man, I only wish I had kids to pass it down to.

    1. We had a couple Duluth packs in our Boundary Waters kit. Amazing bags.

A few years back I decided it was time to limit what I was carrying to work every day. Since I didn't need to schlep a laptop anymore, I downsized from a bag with large messenger dimensions to a Tom Bihn Co-Pilot. My back is much happier, and I'm not carrying around a bunch of stuff I don't need. Just my iPad Pro, the Pencil, a charging cable and battery, my keys, sunglasses, and lip balm & migraine pills. The smaller size means I'm also packing smaller lunches, which – if not helping me slim down – is at least a hedge against continued spread.

        1. This is where I find Apple's product naming proclivities unfortunate. I was shorthanding for the Apple Pencil, a great companion device to the larger of the iPads Pro, which itself barely fits inside the Co-Pilot. Fortunately, I got the ultralight Japanese dyneema version, which has a little more give.

I'm hoping to replace my travel gear (currently: an Eddie Bauer duffel bought at Target in 2009) with an Aeronaut in the future, but I don't travel enough to make it a priority – which I'm happy about on the whole.

          1. The Apple Pencil ... will wonders never cease?

My wife does most of the air travel in our house - has gotten some pretty good use out of a Victorinox carry-on bag. For local trips, I mostly use a cheap duffel bag she picked up as a promotional item on a trip to Bissell (with a Navy flight bag & Rubbermaid totes for gear and sundries).

When flying, it's a beat-up Eddie Bauer duffel which has been sewn/repaired a few more times than I'd like to admit. Also circa late '00's and also (likely) from Target.

Seeing this comment in the sidebar, I imagined something more like a fruit that one could write with.

  3. This year's losses of greats aren't limited to entertainers. Astronomer Vera Rubin died yesterday. She's the one who essentially discovered dark matter by measuring how fast galaxies spin. An observational discovery well worthy of a Nobel Prize, but she's among the many female astronomers who never got the acclaim they deserved.

        1. You know how a certain segment of the Twins fandom complains about Joe Mauer making too much money, think about what the would say if Clayton kershaw was on the Twins payroll.
